When I say relax don’t force things, this passage captures that essence, it also points out what I often say about class notes.

The phrase natural spiritual awareness (⾃然神觉, zìrán shénjué) is the heart of the instruction. It is not merely “be relaxed.” It means the Spirit is allowed to be naturally numinous (灵, líng): not pressed down, not excited upward, not split into competing intentions. This is why the text insists that heavenly naturalness (天然, tiānrán) is the basis of correct Fire Phases.

The classics describe “rules and measures,” yet the author warns that these are ultimately pedagogical: they point to patterns that can be recognized after the fact, not formulas to be imposed from the start. There is the deeper principle here: Doing is the foundation of Non-Doing. One does establish conditions—steadiness, virtue, simplicity, quiet sitting, guarding the heart—yet once the basis is set, the decisive movement is Non-Doing (⽆为, wúwéi): not meddling, not chasing sensations, not “manufacturing” circulation. Hence the line, “naturally one is in Non-Doing, yet nothing is left undone” (⽆为⽽⽆不为, wúwéi ér wú bù wú wéi).

The work completes because the interference stops, not because control increases.

Food for Thought…

Let’s talk about truth today…

I, and a few others, had a discussion the other day with a person who was absolutely sure that a truth he saw was absolute and could not be anything other than the way he saw it…

I, and others in the group saw things differently…

So, who was “right”?

The I Ching and the Dao de Jing tell us, “Devotion to truth enables a revolution” … But …

What does truth really mean?

Is truth the same as honesty?

Is truth the same for every person in every situation?

Devotion to truth enables a revolution of the heart and of society…

In natural and harmonious terms truth is not a set of propositions to be nailed like banners… it is the Dao… an ineffable, unfolding way beneath and through all things…

Laozi begins by warning that the Dao that can be named is not the eternal Dao…

That tells us truth is more an aligning than a statement… a living correspondence with patterns of change, balance, and simplicity…

Truth is close to honesty but not identical… how are they different…

Honesty concerns speech and conduct… avoiding falsehood, speaking plainly…

Truth in the Daoist sense is zhen, the genuine quality of things, and cheng, sincere alignment…

A person can be outwardly honest yet remain entangled in ego, resisting the natural flow…

Conversely, one who practices wu wei… effortless action… lives a truer life even when words are scarce…

Is truth the same for every person in every situation?

The Natural Way holds both unity and particularity… The Dao is one, but its manifestations are many… yin and yang transform endlessly…

What is true for one moment may shift in the next…

Thus truth is contextual, practical, and rooted in attentive presence…

Wisdom discerns when to speak and when to be silent, when to act and when to yield…

Devotion to truth, then, is cultivation… returning to the uncarved block, letting desires fall away, listening to the spontaneous heart…

A revolution born of such devotion overturns coercion and artifice, not by force but by example… quiet, simple, and irresistible… so that others feel the way and follow without being commanded…

This truth asks for humility… to leave conclusions lightly, to test beliefs in life, and to cultivate compassion…

In daily small acts that embody the Dao, truth becomes revolution… subtle, patient, and utterly transformative…

It is a revolution that begins and ends within and spreads outward…

So… are you devoted to “truth”… in your practice… in your words… in your actions… in your thoughts?

And… What is your truth today… at this moment in time…

All the Best!
