Team Benny Ben first conquered cancer at the age of 5, when he beat a Wilms Tumor in his left kidney.

After 5 and a half years cancer free, the cancer has returned to his right lung and his battle begins again.

This round is taking a lot out of Benny. He's tired and his muscles and joints are sore. We do lots of snuggling and binge watching shows. The neuropathy on his legs has been the biggest factor this time, but our hot tub seems to help it a ton. I want to give a huge shout out to Arctic Spas and their owner Brent who has helped us ensure Benny has a hot tub to help his joints this summer. If anyone needs a tub or spa, I highly recommend visiting or calling them! Tell them Benny sent you. 🥰

Having a tough day today. Lots of screamers in outpatient and a pediatric code blue. Glad we are only here for 45 minutes and feeling blessed to be able to walk out of here together today.

A big difference this time round is that Ben understands and wants to know more about his cancer and his treatments. He gets nervous for scans like we do and is already asking questions about his scan on the 22nd.

On to another round of chemo this week. One more round and then PET scan on the 22nd ro see whats next. Either this thing is shrinking and we either look at surgery or more rounds to keep shrinking or we move onto a trial. We got some good news today on the one trial in Canada out of BC Children's. The trial has closed but they will be opening Phase 2 of the trial later this month. That means Phase 1 worked enough and they found the safe doses to be able to move onto Phase 2. AND the best news, the Stollery is currently in training this month to be a host site for this trial. They figure they will be ready by the end of the month or shortly after. Feels like the stars are aligning for us on this one and Ben has already been accepted into the trial. Our Doc is also getting the ball rolling on the other trials so we have options, although based on the genomic sequencing, the Canadian study seems like the best fit. All good news this morning. ❤️

We got some good news today. The drug we were waiting to hear back on whether we would get compassionate care use for was approved today. This is Plan C. Its an inhibitor drug, its purpose is to stop a tumor from growing, basically keep it stable. Plan A is current chemo does its damn job and shrinks the friggen tumor, Plan B is a trial (Vancouver, Seattle or New York) and Plan C is this drug, Selinexor. Without compassionate funding it would have cost us either $30k/month for at least 2 years here (>$700K or $100k US through a trial plus travel costs in New York. So this is fantastic news. Our Plan C is there and waiting and we hope we don't have to use it, but if we do it won't cost us hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Pet Scan is on June 22 to see if these new chemos are working.
