FOOD FOR THOUGHT

According to 'Trend Experts', it appears that more and more the "hustle culture" of wellness is out. Viral trends have been heavily debunked and are now actively avoided, and I have to admit, I am not mad about that at all, and if I'm honest, not terribly surprised either.

For example, Wellness trends on TikTok and Instagram are pivoting toward sustainability and simplicity. You're singing my song!! Influencers are ditching extreme diets and harsh "cleanse" regimens (thank goodness!!) in favor of hormone-aligned workouts, functional nutrition, and holistic nervous system regulation. The top trends dominating right now include:

💪Hormone-Syncing Workouts: Adapting fitness routines—like low-impact Pilates and functional strength training—to fit specific phases of the menstrual cycle to boost energy and avoid burnout. Studies about this began during the pandemic when some Professional Athletes had limited access to training facilities and noticed a marked decrease in performance when they were repeating the same type of exercise too often. At the heart of it, this type of approach to exercise pays attention to the body and adapts to how it's better able to recover during certain phases of an individual's menstrual cycle.
🧐Gut Health Protocols: One of my FAVOURITE topics! Moving beyond basic probiotics to deeply personalized nutrition, with an emphasis on fermented foods and targeted fiber intake for mood and brain health. As simple as this one sounds, it has the potential to make the MOST impact!
🤪Nervous System Regulation: A surge in holistic stress management, including targeted breathwork and designated digital detoxes rather than relying solely on intense, heavy-load workouts. The differences can be noticed within a matter of days!

Now, don't get me wrong, the previous Viral Trends haven't disappeared. The content still exists on the interwebs, and the algorithm pays attention to what you search and have searched previously. BUT, I like to think we are all collectively using a bit more discernment and cranking up our BS RADAR a little more so as to not be taken in as often by the charisma.

Today is Juneteenth

While this is a United States federal holiday to commemorate the end of slavery in the country - officially named Juneteenth National Independence Day - it is significant to anyone who needs a reminder of history. It is also frequently referred to as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, or Black Independence Day.
The day is meant to honor a critical turning point at the end of the American Civil War: The Delay of the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation, which was signed on January 1, 1863 by Pres. Abraham Lincoln, legally freeing enslaved people in Confederate states. However, because Texas was geographically isolated and a stronghold for slaveholders, it took over two years for it to be enforced there. Then, on June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and issued General Order No. 3, officially enforcing the freedom of the state's remaining enslaved population.

Thank you for this lovely graphic and the reminder to never forget to be grateful for the freedom and freedoms that we enjoy today!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Unpopular Opinion: As a general rule, Gluten is not the Devil.

There, I said it. Gluten is still taking a beating, so it's high time we took a closer look to see if it's really the issue or just scapegoating without dealing with root problems that will lead to larger health concerns.

Now, don't get me wrong, there are people who definitely CANNOT eat gluten containing foods. Those Folks have had a diagnosis (like Celiac's Disease or Addison's), so they have confirmation of some REAL consequences that could lead to time in the hospital. If you are concerned you may be dealing with any of these issues, don't just avoid gluten, please ask for testing! There are other long term health concerns that can go along with these, and a diagnosis will give you the ammunition for further investigation!

However, if you are suggested to try avoiding gluten (without the above concerns), maybe also start a conversation about your microbiome health and overall inflammation load! The gluten issue might be the straw that broke the camels back and not the sum total creating your symptoms (sometimes varying ones that may seem unrelated).

Let's get nerdy about it. Gliadin, a component of the Gluten protein molecule (found in grains like wheat, rye, barley, spelt and triticale) is mildly inflammatory for a good percentage of the population. HOWEVER, on it's own you'd have to eat a LOT of it for it to be the problem. If, however, you are someone already dealing with chronic inflammation, from a variety of other sources (stress, antibiotics, poor diet, etc) the presence of gluten in the diet can be the red flag for damage already done. Removing it can relieve symptoms temporarily, but doesn't repair the damage. Also, if we remove something from the diet for long enough, we stop making the enzymes to digest it; we are nothing if not efficient. When you add it in again, even in a normal serving size, it can cause digestive distress, since we don't have the tools handy to process it.

There is so much more to unpack here, but as with everything, there are nuances to consider for each individual. Let's chat about that in person
