“I want to leave a legacy at Walmart like my dad left at Loewen Windows. My dad was my inspiration.”
Since November 2022, Michael has been building his own legacy at Walmart.
From stocking shelves and helping customers to making sure products are where they belong, Michael takes pride in knowing his work matters. He enjoys the work itself, the friendships he’s made with coworkers, and being part of a team.
For Michael, having a job means more than a paycheque. It means knowing he has worked hard, earned his own money and is supporting himself.
He also knows what makes a workplace a good place to work. Michael appreciates managers who take the time to teach him, support him when things change, and recognise the work he does. One moment that has stayed with him was when a manager told him they respected him. It meant the world to him.
His message to employers? Give people a chance to show what they can do. Michael describes himself as reliable, loyal and ready to take on the tasks he’s given.
And his advice to other people with disabilities looking for work?
“Go for it… the possibilities are there!”
Michael’s story is a reminder that inclusive employment is about more than getting hired. It’s about having the opportunity to work hard, build relationships, earn your own money and make a difference in your workplace.
