Experts say the term ‘ ’ is misleading. Here’s why
They argue that the term has outlived its usefulness
The phrases “autism spectrum” or “on the spectrum” have become part of everyday language. They are often used as different ways of referring to someone who is “neurodivergent”.
But the idea of a single spectrum, which stretches from “mild” to “severe”, may be misleading. And some autism experts, including me, argue the term has outlived its usefulness.
Many autistic adults prefer the words “autism” and “autistic” directly. Autism is not a scale of severity but a way of being. It’s a difference rather than a defect.

transporter suppression restores function in models

A team of scientists has identified a new strategy for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by targeting a key mechanism involved in brain signalling.

The research, led by Director Kim Eunjoon of the IBS Center for Synaptic Brain Dysfunctions, found that suppressing a glycine transporter known as Slc6a20a/SLC6A20 could the function of NMDA receptors (NMDARs), which play a crucial role in learning, memory and social behaviour.

People with and more recently show lower risk than earlier cases
A multinational study published in JAMA Psychiatry examined whether rising diagnosis rates of ASD and ADHD have been accompanied by changes in the genetic risk profile of diagnosed individuals.
After looking at more than 37,000 individuals from Denmark who were diagnosed with either ASD or ADHD between 1994 and 2016, the researchers found that the genetic risks of autism and ADHD have decreased over time among people with diagnoses.

Scientists Identify 2 Distinct Subtypes of in The

But we might have just made a breakthrough.
In a new study, an international team of researchers has identified two subtypes of autism, based on evidence in the brains of both humans and mice, using cross-species analysis to verify their findings and confirm how the subtypes differ biologically.
