Most people know candy causes cavities—but did you know some common “healthy” snacks do too?
Feeding kids is tough, and nutrition matters—but so does protecting their teeth. Here’s what to watch for:
Crackers: Break down into sticky, sugar-rich paste that clings to molars.
Flavoured Milk: Can contain more sugar than soda. White milk has natural sugars, but most varieties are fortified with vitamins and minerals making them more nutritious.
Applesauce: Don’t be fooled by the ingredients; an apple that’s been liquified doesn’t have the same benefits as the actual fruit (even if there’s no added sugar). Chewing whole food helps keep teeth clean and stimulates saliva that flushes away the nasties.
Sweetened Yogurt: Dairy has natural sugars, but sweetened varieties pack a sugary punch.
Fruit Snacks: Often just candy in disguise. Dried ones have more fibre but are still super sticky.
Pro Tip: Stick to snack times—grazing increases risk. Always drink water with and after snacks/meals!
