Helping You Connect the Dots Between Skin + Body

Nettle is a plant I often think of when skin feels reactive, depleted or easily overwhelmed. 🌿

It’s a deeply nutritive herb, naturally containing vitamins, minerals and plant compounds that support healthy skin function from within.

Nettle is also traditionally used to support a balanced histamine response—an interesting connection for skin that tends to appear flushed, itchy or reactive alongside seasonal sensitivities.

From a Hälsa perspective, nettle offers two forms of support: helping replenish the body while encouraging a calmer, more balanced skin response.

Because supporting reactive skin isn’t only about what we apply topically. It’s also about understanding the patterns influencing how the skin functions.

If it feels like your skin suddenly reacts to everything — you’re probably not imagining the change.

Products that never bothered you start to sting.
Heat brings on redness.
Stress shows up on your face.
Your skin feels tight, itchy, flushed or just unpredictable.

Sometimes the skin barrier needs support. But sensitive, reactive skin can also be influenced by what’s happening beneath the surface — including nervous system signalling, inflammation, hormones, immune activity and stress.

At Hälsa, the goal isn’t to keep throwing more products at reactive skin.
It’s to ask: what might be lowering your skin’s tolerance in the first place?

> Sometimes the first step is less stimulation, more barrier support, and helping the whole system settle.

🌿 Reactive skin needs understanding before it needs correcting.

Your skin has its own stress-response system.

When we think about stress, we usually think about sleep, mood, tension or the nervous system. But the skin is part of that conversation too.

Your skin contains nerves, immune cells and chemical messengers that respond to what is happening within the body. That is one reason periods of stress may correspond with more flushing, itching, sensitivity, inflammation or slower barrier recovery.

It does not mean stress is the cause of every skin concern.
> It means the skin is not separate from the rest of you.

In the latest Hälsa Journal post, I explore the skin–nervous system connection and why sometimes the better question is not:

“What product am I missing?”

but

“What is influencing my skin’s ability to regulate and recover?”

The Hälsa Lens ❀

We don’t look at skin in isolation, we look at the whole picture.

> Your skin barrier.
> Your nervous system.
> Your stress patterns.
> Your lymphatic flow.
> Your hormones.
> Your digestion + nutrition.
> Your sleep.
> And the story of how your skin got here.

The Hälsa approach is about connecting those dots.

✿ HAWTHORN + ROSACEA: THE CONNECTION

When we think about rosacea, we often focus only on what we put on the skin.

But redness-prone skin can also have a strong vascular component — flushing, heat and visible changes in circulation are often part of the picture.

This is where hawthorn catches my attention.

Traditionally used as a cardiovascular herb, hawthorn has an affinity for circulation and is rich in antioxidant plant compounds. From a Hälsa perspective, it’s one of the plants I find interesting when looking at the whole-body context behind red, reactive skin.

Not because one herb “treats” rosacea.

But because skin doesn’t exist in isolation — and sometimes understanding the systems connected to the skin gives us a much bigger picture.

Her skin had been bothering her for years. Burnout made it worse.

This client came to Hälsa experiencing a persistent heat-like rash, high stress, low energy, digestive changes and significant facial + neck tension.

One thing she had already noticed?

When stress increased, her skin tended to flare.

So we widened the lens:

🌷Rather than focusing only on what we could put on the skin, we looked at what else was happening around it: inconsistent meals, burnout, tension, digestion, nourishment and very little space to actually slow down.

Through her Hälsa Regulation Sessions, we began focusing on creating more steadiness — nervous system regulation, lymphatic support, facial + jaw release, regular nourishment, gentle movement, rest and botanical support.

Your skin doesn’t exist in isolation.

And when it keeps getting worse, it may be worth asking what else has been happening beneath the surface.

We talk about “stress” all the time.
But what is actually happening inside your body when you’re stressed—and why is your skin one of the first places to show it?

Your nervous system, hormones, immune system and skin are in constant communication. So when you’re living in a prolonged state of stress, your skin may become more reactive, inflamed, sensitive, dry, or flushed.

I wrote about the skin–nervous system connection, cortisol, and the stress response, and what you can actually do to support your skin when life feels like a lot.
