Being in birth work for over 13 years, I wasn't all that surprised by the level of intervention women are experiencing in pregnancy and birth based on the recent birth survey I am compiling. What I was interested to explore was how women felt about their experience and their choices. And did they feel like they were given balanced information to make informed decisions regarding the care and interventions they were consenting to.
In my opinion often women are sold on overstated benefits and understated risks to intervention.
in the recent birth survey 30.8% felt they were NOT given adequate information regarding benefits and risks to routine ultrasounds, despite the fact they had consented to multiple during their pregnancy! And to be honest I am very curious to see for those that did feel they received adequate information, would they really be able to define or recall a specific risk explained to them?
