If you have ever been in my yoga class, you know I always say "feeling anxious? Get your feet up. Feeling sad? Feet up. Happy? Feet up!"This does not mean only handstands😂feet up on the wall, raise your feet up on a couch or stool...get creative.
Because I am a yoga instructor I always get asked, "can you do a handstand/headstand?"
Short answer you may have heard me say "sometimes" or "kinda"
Long answer..
The truth is, they are never my focus of conversation because I really don't love the cliché and implication that all yoga instructors should be able to do a handstand etc...etc. listen, no judgements if you think this but for me, yoga goes much deeper and there is no pose that can make you good vs bad at yoga. Ever.
Yes, they are fun, skillfull, impressive, a lot of focus, strength and breathwork but for me doing a headstand/handstand isn't what others may view as "being good at yoga" of an "experienced/advanced" yogi. I love a good challenge too.
Moving my body, trusting my breath, and coming into my own body, mind and breathwork can allow me to have a successful handstand. HOWEVER bodies change (for many, many reasons) Some weeks I can't and honestly months go by without me ever even getting into that pose. Example, this was my first day since having my daughyer I used my Feet up and moved my body upside down. I did get on the floor following this video without my feet up and I felt strong, grounded and way more like myself.
Know why I did? Because I was filled with energy I didn't love. Everyone has been sick, nobody is sleeping and it has been very "doomsday" so if you've ever been in my yoga classes i always say "GET YOUR FEET UP!" There are so many benefits to GETTING YOUR FEET UP. What happened? After moving my body for just 5mins upside down, I felt immediately better mentally. I checked in with my body and MOVED ENERGY. THE STALE NEGATIVE ENERGY in literally 5minutes.
Get your feet up, however that might look.
Not possible right now? That is ok, let's take a few deep breaths instead together friends 🩷
I have neglected my own practice this last while, and if you have too that is ok, let's come home together, within ourselves.
