I got out of bed shortly before 6 a.m, went to relax in my easy chair and listen to the coffee brewing. I could hear the chickens out in the coop which is not unusual because they all seem to want to lay in the same nesting box. However this morning they were a little louder πŸ”
I thought that I had better look out the window and see what was going on...but just one more minute in my easy chair.
Nope! My Ukrainian worrying side took over and I got up and looked out - only to see a bear scaling a tree within the chicken run! To me it looked the size of an Alaskan grizzly 🐻
I went into an immediate Warrior like disposition πŸ›‘
The Woodsman was just getting out of bed and was catapulted by my shrieks! We slipped our feet into a pair of shoes and the two of us along with the dogs attempted to get out through the screen door without opening it first...
need i say more? 😬
The cub would have easily scaled the tree and gotten out over the fence, met up with Mama and they disappeared in the forest with the dogs πŸ• chasing after.
Everyone on the homestead is just fine and I am immensely grateful for that πŸ™ Only the chicken feeder and fence sustained a bit of damage.
Surveying the aftermath showed that the cub would have gotten into the coop through the coop hatch that I always leave open - that will change going forward - and would have happily sat there eating chicken feed.
Sir Kristoff πŸ“ looked a little ruffled so we imagine he was fearlessly flying up against this bear cub protecting his flock!
We want to keep everyone as safe and secure as possible - thus we will be buttoning up the hatches a bit more- we also realize that we are set up in the woods and nature is as nature is 🌳
In sheriff Chesters 🐈 defense... today is his birthday, or at least the day he showed up on the homestead 3 years ago. He likely would have been up late last night partying and so he just accidentally slept in this morning πŸŒ„

A labour~of~love by The Woodsman from hand selected cedar off our land. 🀎 We live within a forested paradise...with about 1,000,000 🦟 as dusk rolls in πŸŒ™ This timber frame covered porch is our haven.

Making homemade medicines on the homestead today 🍡 Inner and outer bark from birch trees (grateful to find a tree previously damaged that I could pull from) and fresh spruce tree tips 🌲

The birch bark is soaked in apple cider vinegar for 4-6 week to draw out its salicylic acid. This compound can be traced back to the early days of the asprin. Salicylic acid is a natural & effective pain reliever and reliever of inflammation throughout the body. 1 tsp per day as needed. I am especially crafting this for a loved one who is wanting to move away from their daily prescribed asprin.

The fresh pine tips are high in antioxidants, namely vitamin C & A, boost immunity and taste amazing! I made a few different things this year; an infused pine needle honey, infused celtic sea salt and infused sugar. The honey I will let sit indefinitely and use as needed. The salt and sugar i will let dry out and then enjoy!

Today was a day for mucking out on the homestead πŸ’©
Don't we all have those days in life where it, whatever "it" is, has built up, taken up space and been around long enough! Time to get out the shovel and deal with things πŸ’ͺ Whew.

While cleaning out the area where the Cornish Cross chickens are, I tripped over Bailey as I was carrying a pail of water. The water flew everywhere, I flew, paper towels flew, the cage end flew over, Bailey flew out of the coop and a few choice words flew out of my mouth.

James came over from across the meadow, looked at the disaster wide eyed. I explained. He said, well I came over to see if you were okay because from what I was overhearing, something was happening in here and I feared you'd never be the same again!πŸ˜† 🀣 πŸ˜‚

Nonetheless, the chicken area got cleaned out and freshly bedded. I was really hoping to move them into their outdoor 12 ft by 20 ft enclosure this week that James had constructed but the nights are just dipping down too low and I don't want the poor little ones to get cold. We'll wait off till towards the end of the week and then they will graduate to the great outdoors 🌳
