How this beauty supply store became a hub for Surreyβs Black community
Royals Beauty is a place for community to connect and even grab a bite to eat.
Surrey is home to B.C.βs largest Black population. During Black History Month, The Early Editionβs associate producer Sia Foryoh paid a visit to Royals Beauty in Surrey. Itβs a beauty supply store, a hair salon, a community centre, a drive-thru takeout jerk spot and a future grocery store β all in one. As she finds out, the store is a hub for the local Black community.
When Janice Davis came to Canada from Jamaica at age 11, she says there wasnβt really anywhere for her to interact with her community.
Thatβs why sheβs turned her business into a place where people can gather, meet others and connect to their culture.
Her shop, Royals Beauty, is a beauty supply store, a salon, a take-out jerk spot and a place where people come to play games, watch sports and hang out with friends.
