Prostate cancer screening isn’t necessarily one-size-fits-all. 💙
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month — an important reminder to understand your individual risk and keep conversations about preventive health from being put off.
Several factors can influence prostate cancer risk:
- Age: Risk increases with age and becomes greater after age 50.
- Family history: Having a close blood relative, particularly a father, brother or son, who has had prostate cancer can increase your risk.
- African or Caribbean ancestry: Men of African or Caribbean ancestry have a higher risk of developing prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer can develop without noticeable symptoms in its early stages, which is one reason conversations about testing can matter.
A PSA test is one tool that can help find prostate cancer early, but deciding whether and when to be tested should be individualized. Your healthcare provider can help you consider your personal risk, the potential benefits and limitations of testing, your overall health and what further testing could involve.
Your Pure Pharmacy team can support the conversation too — whether you have questions about medications, everyday men’s health concerns, or need guidance on when to speak with your healthcare provider for further assessment.
💬 Do the men in your family know their family history and prostate cancer risk?
This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, encourage the men in your life to stay engaged with their health and bring questions or concerns forward rather than putting them off.
