There was a time when you lowered the bar just to keep someone close.

You excused behavior that hurt. You explained away the missing effort. You told yourself that a little disrespect was normal, that no one is perfect, that being alone would be worse than being treated like an option.

Yet somehow, the more you bent, the less you were valued.

Standards are not demands. They are the quiet lines that show people how to treat you. When you hold them, some will adjust and rise to meet you. Others will complain, pull away or disappear. That is not a loss. It is information. People who truly belong in your life do not need to be convinced to respect you.

Letting the wrong people walk can feel lonely at first, because the space they leave behind is real. But an empty space is not the same as an empty life.

You don’t have to be harsh. You don’t have to hold a grudge. You don’t have to chase anyone who is unwilling to meet you halfway.

Having standards is not arrogance. Losing people who fall short is not failure. Protecting your self-respect is simply how you decide who deserves access to you.

Keep the bar where it belongs. Let the door stay open for those who can reach it, and let the rest pass through.

Because what leaves when you stand firm was never meant to stay.

Once, a student approached Rumi and asked, "How should I deal with the pain and suffering in life?"

Rumi, in his wisdom, decided to share a story:

"There was a man who sought the wisdom of a great sage, hoping to find a way to escape his suffering. The sage looked at the man and said, 'I will help you, but first, you must do something for me. Take this spoon, fill it with oil, and walk through the town without spilling a drop.'

"The man thought this task was simple enough and agreed. He took the spoon, filled it with oil, and began to walk through the town. As he carefully balanced the spoon, he couldn't help but focus all his attention on not spilling any oil.

"When he returned to the sage, the sage asked, 'Did you see the beautiful flowers in the town square? Did you notice the children playing and the laughter of families?' The man realized he had been so fixated on the spoon that he hadn't noticed anything else.

"The sage then said, 'This is the key to dealing with pain. Just as you were so focused on the spoon that you missed the beauty around you, when you are consumed by your suffering, you miss the beauty of life. Pain is like the spoon, and life is like the town. Don't let the pain consume your entire focus. Remember to look around and appreciate the beauty that still exists.'"

The student understood the sage's message: while pain and suffering are part of life, it's essential not to let them overshadow the beauty and joy that can be found in every moment. This story serves as a reminder that even in the face of pain, there is an opportunity to find meaning and beauty in life.

The hardest part of independence is accepting that not everyone will approve of your choices. Real strength comes from knowing your values, setting boundaries, and refusing to trade your identity for acceptance. Human nature often rewards conformity, but genuine self-respect means thinking for yourself, even when standing alone.
