Modern Medical began with a daughter looking for ways to help her mother.

In 2015, our founder, Dr. Meaghan Labine , was a second-year medical student at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM), helping her parents operate Birch Lake Lodge, their fly-in fishing lodge near Red Lake, Ontario. Her mother had wounds on both legs that had not healed despite more than a year of wound care.

Using satellite internet at the lodge, Dr. Labine began researching innovative treatment options. That search introduced her to hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). She purchased a portable chamber and set it up at the lodge, where her mother used it over the summer alongside her regular wound care. By the end of the summer, her mother’s wounds had almost completely healed, inspiring Dr. Labine to explore medical-grade HBOT further.

By October 2015, she had written her first business plan to bring a hyperbaric oxygen therapy clinic to Northwestern Ontario.

The idea stayed with her through medical school, residency and years of caring for patients across the region. In 2023, she purchased 898 Alloy Place in Thunder Bay, the future home of Modern Medical Hyperbaric Clinic. After two years of planning and construction, we welcomed our first patients on September 23, 2025.

Her mother passed away in August 2024, before the clinic opened. Her family’s support had been part of the journey from the beginning.

This month, we celebrate one year of serving our community and share the story that brought us here. What began with a search for help with non-healing wounds grew into a clinic offering HBOT for selected non-healing wounds and delayed radiation injury. Alongside our cancer rehabilitation services, this care supports healing and recovery, bringing more treatment options closer to home.

On September 23, 2025, we treated our first patient.

Today we’re celebrating one year in service with our patients and staff, and yes, there is cake! 🎂

When we opened our doors at 898 Alloy Place, Modern Medical became Northwestern Ontario’s first hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) facility, bringing this care closer to home for our community.

Thank you to the referring physicians who placed their trust in us, the partners who took the time to learn about our work, and especially the patients who trusted us with their care. To our staff, thank you for making our patients feel welcome and supported every day.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll share how the clinic came together, introduce the team behind the care, and explain what HBOT is and who it can help. Follow along as we look back on our first year!

St. Joseph's Care Group brought healthcare providers together in Thunder Bay for the Offloading and Diabetic Wound Management Workshop.

On behalf of Modern Medical, our Physician Assistant, Laura Elizabeth, attended to build our wound care skills and strengthen relationships with allied care providers.

Offloading reduces pressure on an affected area of the body to help a wound heal. At Modern Medical, we are working to combine these wound care approaches with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which can enhance healing in selected non-healing wounds.

Together, these approaches support more comprehensive care closer to home in Northwestern Ontario.

Thank you to Seona Ferlong and the North West Regional Wound Care Program team!

St. Joseph's Care Group and Wounds Canada brought hands-on wound care training to Thunder Bay through the Regional Wound Care Skills Symposium.

Our CEO and Medical Director, Dr. Meaghan Labine, attended the inaugural Best Practice Approach to Wound Debridement and Minor Surgical Procedures Skills Lab, practicing debridement, biopsy and suturing.

At Modern Medical, we are building our wound care skills alongside hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which can enhance healing in selected non-healing wounds as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

We also welcomed the Wounds Canada faculty for a clinic tour and a conversation about combining our services to support patients closer to home in Northwestern Ontario.

Thank you to Wounds Canada, Seona Furlong and the North West Regional Wound Care Program team!

New hope for healing skin grafts and flaps

A large 2026 review pooling 24 studies and 2,246 patients found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may help support the healing and survival of skin grafts and flaps that are struggling to recover after surgery. The researchers gave a strong recommendation for using HBOT before and after surgery to support healing and possibly reduce the need for repeat procedures.

This finding comes from a 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Global Open (PRS Global Open).

HBOT is OHIP recognized in Ontario. Ask your physician for a referral to Modern Medical Hyperbaric Clinic in Thunder Bay to find out if it may be right for you.

New Treatment Options for Life Threatening Skin Infections 🩺

A 2026 study published in Medical Gas Research looked at patients being treated for Fournier's gangrene, a serious infection. Researchers compared standard care (surgery and antibiotics) to standard care plus hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

The study pooled data from 13 studies and 688 patients. Adding HBOT was associated with a meaningfully higher survival rate, with no extra hospital time or added surgeries needed. 💪

HBOT for eligible conditions is OHIP covered. Ask your physician for a referral to Modern Medical Hyperbaric Clinic in Thunder Bay to see if this therapy may be right for you.
