Stroke risk is influenced by more than individual choices. Age, health conditions, income, access to nutritious food, housing, transportation and access to healthcare can all affect a person’s risk and their ability to manage their health.
In Chatham-Kent:
23.6% of residents are adults aged 65 or older, compared with 18.5% across Ontario
4.5% of residents identify as Indigenous, compared with 2.9% across Ontario
2.5% identify as Black
1.3% identify as South Asian
50.7% of residents are women
The profile also gives Chatham-Kent a material-resource marginalization score of 5 out of 5, compared with 3.86 across the Southwestern Ontario Stroke Network region. A higher score reflects greater barriers to basic needs such as housing, food, clothing and education.
These statistics remind us that stroke prevention must include accessible healthcare, culturally responsive services and support for the social conditions that affect health.
