Feeling anxious, shaky, crashing, or craving sugar after coffee is not something to ignore.
If you feel:
shaky after coffee
anxious or overstimulated
exhausted by mid-morning
craving sugar later in the day
wired but tired
…it may not just be the caffeine itself.
For some people, drinking coffee on an empty stomach can amplify a stress response in the body, impacting cortisol, blood sugar, energy, cravings, and even skin health.
This is why I rarely recommend looking at coffee in isolation.
Instead of immediately removing it, sometimes the better question is:
what is missing alongside it?
Adding protein, healthy fats, and fibre can help support:
- blood sugar balance
- satiety
- cortisol response
- energy levels
Even something as simple as adding 10–20g of protein alongside or in your coffee can make a noticeable difference in how you feel throughout the morning.
You do not necessarily need to quit coffee.
Your body may just need more support around it.
Save this for the next time your morning coffee leaves you feeling worse instead of better.
