📝 Birth plans: yay or nay? 🤔

👎🏻 We can't PLAN how birth will go; we can have desires & intentions, but birth is a physiological process kind of outside of our control.

👍🏻 Figuring out ahead of time what we want for our births, what our preferences & priorities are, is an invaluable process. We aren't really in control of our births, however it behoves us to do our homework to maximise the chances of having a good birth.

👎🏻 Care providers - especially in busy hospital settings when we get whoever's on shift at the time - may not even read our birth plans (especially if there are many pages and lots of little details), so is it worth doing?

My answer? 👍🏻👍🏻 YES, for sure.

The process of thinking about HOW you want to birth your baby, what setting, what people, what procedures or practices you want or don't want for your birth, is the invaluable part.

Women who go into birth without having given it much thought are more likely to end up dissatisfied with how their birth went. 🫤

Considering all the permutations is a powerful way to hone in on what's important to YOU. Even when you do all the things, situations can arise that weren't foreseen or wanted, so thinking about those possibilities ahead of time and figuring out how you would want them handled can help soften the blow. (I.e.: make multiple birth plans, just in case.)

Women deep in the throes of labour are NOT in a position to be making important decisions, or possibly even sticking to their original intentions! Figuring out your preferences ahead of time - while still in a good place to be making logical decisions - AND SHARING IT WITH YOUR BIRTH TEAM is critical. (..including a doula whom you know, trust and jive with, of course. 😉)

So, my advice: formulate a primary & contingency birth plans and share them with your husband, doula & midwife or doctor - or at least bring them to the hospital with you on birth day - and we'll help you, to the best of our ability, to have a positive birth experience! 🤗

✨ I'm ba-a-ack! 🌸

This is my hubby & me at the Flavian Amphitheatre/ Colosseum in Rome, Italy, just over a week ago (late July '26)..... Yes, our anniversary Mediterranean holiday was pretty 𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨!! 😍
...And now we've returned home and I'm back in the groove, eager to support pregnant, birthing & new moms! 🤗 I'm working with a few birth clients at the moment, although I have some room to provide postpartum support, and I'll gladly welcome inquiries from expectant mamas due in mid-September onward.

👀 One of these things is not like the others,.... 👀

(One of these things just isn't the same!)

Take a minute to identify everything in the first picture, if you can,......

Which is the odd one out?

The baby 🤗 >> but why, what makes is different? 🤔

Babies are 𝗕𝗢𝗥𝗡, the rest are 𝘥𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥! 😁
(..𝘜𝘯𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴, 𝘰𝘧 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦, 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘳𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 '𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘬' 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺,.... 😂)

Babies were said to be 'delivered' because the term originally meant 'to disburden or free' a woman from her pregnancy.

Over time, this shifted from describing the mother being freed of the burden of carrying her baby to describing the medical act of bringing the baby into the world.

As childbirth moved into hospitals, 'delivery' became a medical term for the active process of assisting the baby out of the birth canal.
.....The last time I checked, it seemed to me that it was the 𝗪𝗢𝗠𝗔𝗡 who was 𝗚𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗕𝗜𝗥𝗧𝗛 to her child.

Still referring to babies as being 'delivered' is, in this doula's opinion, robbing the woman of the recognition of all the blood, sweat & tears that she quite literally put into bringing her baby earthside!

(Even if assistance is required to help get the baby out, the woman had still done the lioness' share of the work.
Even in the case of a planned caesarean, it's no walk in the park for mama!💜)

LANGUAGE IS POWERFUL.

'Delivering' vs 'giving birth' is about who 'owns' the experience, who has the 'power' and 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗼(𝗶𝗻𝗲) 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆.💪🏻

What's done is done, and we can only do the best we can until we know better.

Going forward, let's change the perspective and honour moms 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 their babies. 🤗

"Babies are born; pizzas are delivered"! 😉

Some fathers spend Father’s Day holding their children. Others spend it holding their memories.

As Father’s Day approaches, my heart is with the fathers who carry their babies in their hearts instead of in their arms.

The dads who stood beside hospital beds and prayed for miracles.

The dads who kissed their baby’s forehead goodbye.

The dads who held their child when they took their last breath.

The dads who walked out of the hospital carrying a memory box instead of a car seat.

The dads who quietly broke down in the shower because it was the only place they felt safe to cry.

We often talk about grieving mothers, and rightly so. But too often, grieving fathers are forgotten.

Society teaches men to be strong. To hold it together. To protect everyone around them. To be the rock when everything is falling apart.

But grief doesn’t care how strong you are.

The strongest men I know are the ones who have loved deeply enough to have their hearts shattered.

The dads who get up every day and go to work carrying a pain most people can’t see.

The dads who continue showing up for their families while silently missing the child who should be there too.

The dads who still imagine what their baby’s laugh would sound like. What their first words would have been. What life would look like if they were still here.

To every father grieving a baby:

I see you.

Your grief matters.

Your tears matter.

Your baby matters.

You don’t have to pretend you’re okay. You don’t have to carry this weight alone. Missing your child does not make you weak. It makes you a father who loves deeply.

And God sees every tear you’ve cried, even the ones nobody else knows about.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I pray for all the dads carrying the weight of child loss. The fathers who are hurting in silence, the ones trying to stay strong for everyone around them while their own hearts are breaking.

Lord, wrap them in Your comfort and remind them that they do not have to carry this burden alone. Give them the courage to grieve, the strength to keep going, and the peace that only You can provide.

When the days feel heavy and the silence feels overwhelming, remind them that You are near to the brokenhearted. Fill the empty spaces with Your presence and help them find hope, even in the midst of sorrow.

Remind them that their babies are never forgotten and that their love as a father does not end because their child is no longer here.

We trust You to hold what we cannot.

Here's a great opportunity to learn more about breastfeeding!

Having a lactation consultant on speed dial is an invaluable tool after birth (and learnings from her beforehand birth, too!), however building a good educational foundation on the principles & how-tos of breastfeeding BEFORE baby comes along is a fantastic way to start.

𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟱𝟬% 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁! 😍

🤗 Hi! I'm Doula Jenn B.

Are you new here? -Welcome!

Here's a little bit about me -- including some stuff that seasoned followers might not even know?!......

🔹I'm a birth & postpartum doula
🔹I'm Christian ~ 'New Church', to be precise (not Catholic, not Protestant, somewhere in-between; it's its own branch of Christianity, and no, I'm not surprised if you haven't heard of it), born, raised & chosen for myself
🔹I'm nearly 27 years married to my sweet hubby 💕 We have one son, 19yo, my dream come true (pictured with me above! ☝🏻🥰)
🔹I had a fantastic birth, which is why I want to help moms have fantastic births of their own 💜
🔹I've loved babies since I was knee-high to a grasshopper; when I was little I said to my mom, "When I grow up, I want to be just like you: NOTHING" 😂 -- i.e. not a working woman, a stay-at-home mom! 💗 ~ which I had the pleasure of being for many years
🔹I've lived in Canada (eastern townships of Montréal + western suburb of Toronto), the US (northeastern suburb of Philadelphia) and Australia (southern suburb of Sydney)
🔹I love to travel and have visited.. 12 countries (9 besides Canada, US & Aus), so far?
