What's really happening inside a varicose vein?

Many people think varicose veins are simply enlarged veins visible beneath the skin. In reality, the underlying issue often starts with weakened vein valves.

When these valves stop closing properly, blood can flow backward and pool in the vein. Over time, pressure builds up, causing veins to stretch and symptoms such as heaviness, aching, swelling, fatigue, and visible varicose veins to develop.

This condition is known as venous insufficiency, and it is one of the most common causes of varicose veins.

If you are experiencing symptoms, a vascular assessment and ultrasound can help identify the underlying cause and determine the most appropriate treatment options.

How long does recovery take after venous ablation?

One of the advantages of venous ablation is the relatively short recovery period. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, most patients are able to walk immediately afterward and return to many normal daily activities within a day or two.

Some mild bruising, tenderness, or tightness in the treated area is common during the first few days and usually improves on its own. While recovery is generally quick, the vein itself continues to close and be absorbed by the body over time.

Many patients notice improvements in symptoms such as leg heaviness, swelling, aching, and fatigue within weeks, with results continuing to develop over the following months.

If you have varicose veins or symptoms of venous insufficiency, a vascular assessment can help determine which treatment options may be appropriate for you.

Varicose Veins & Summer: What's the Connection?

Many people notice that their legs feel heavier, more tired, or more swollen during the summer months.

One reason is that heat causes veins to expand. When veins become wider, it may be more difficult for blood to travel efficiently back to the heart. As a result, symptoms such as leg heaviness, swelling, aching, or fatigue may become more noticeable.

Walking, staying active, and maintaining good hydration support healthy circulation throughout the summer.

It's also important to remember that varicose veins are not always just a cosmetic concern. They can sometimes be associated with chronic venous disease, which affects how blood flows through the veins of the legs.

Understanding your veins is the first step toward understanding your vascular health.

🩸 HOW DO BLOOD CLOTS FORM?

A blood clot may develop when:

➡️ Blood flow slows down
➡️ A vein wall is damaged
➡️ Blood becomes more likely to clot

Together, these factors are known as Virchow's Triad.

Blood clots are a normal part of healing, but they can also form inside veins under certain conditions.

Modern vein care has evolved far beyond traditional vein stripping surgery.

Today, minimally invasive procedures like Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) and Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) are commonly used to treat varicose veins with smaller incisions and shorter recovery times.

This educational carousel explains:
✔ How EVLT works
✔ How RFA works
✔ Key differences
✔ Recovery considerations
✔ Why ultrasound evaluation matters

Every patient’s vein anatomy is different, which is why treatment selection should always be individualized.

Did you know that varicose veins and chronic venous disease affect millions of people?

International studies show that up to one-third of adults may experience some degree of chronic venous disease, including varicose veins and spider veins. Many people report symptoms such as heaviness, tired legs, swelling, or discomfort, especially after long periods of standing or sitting.

Vein health is an important part of overall wellness.
