Rural homes like Broadview Nursing Home in Smiths Falls are vital to their communities. Replacing an older home with an up-to-date building has made it possible for seniors who need care to stay close to people and places they love – and for nearly 170 people to continue to have jobs in the community.

Construction in rural communities also brings major economic benefits. Building Broadview Nursing Home contributed $69 million to GDP and $48.2 million in labour income.

Seniors do not stop being neighbours, leaders and community builders when they move into long-term care.

This , Ontario’s theme is “Ontario Seniors, Let’s Get Moving,” highlighting the importance of helping seniors stay active, engaged and connected to their communities.

Through OLTCA’s Heart Recognition Awards, we honour the impact of seniors living in long-term care homes who continue to give back and strengthen the communities they call home.

At peopleCare Tavistock, residents were recognized for turning recreational bingo winnings into school snacks, backpacks and hygiene supplies for neighbours in need. Their story is one example of the generosity, kindness and community spirit found in long-term care homes across Ontario.

Long-term care is 24/7 nursing care. It is also connection, purpose and community.

“I love Engagement Day! I love that we bring in MPs and MPPs to see what we’re doing.”

Cate Freeze, Family Council President at Humber Meadows LTCH, said it best.

LTC Community Engagement Day is about connection. It’s about opening doors and building relationships that help people see the compassion, innovation and community that exist inside Ontario’s LTC homes every day.

Over the last two years, we’ve seen extraordinary momentum grow across the province. Participation has more than doubled. Hundreds of local leaders have stepped inside homes to meet residents, families and staff. Communities have come together to celebrate the people who make long-term care feel like home.

And this year, the movement continues to grow. Join us September 18, 2026.

LTC Community Engagement Day shows what happens when we open our doors and our hearts; we build connections that last.

What began through the leadership of Ontario Long Term Care Association members has quickly become one of the sector’s most meaningful provincewide moments.

Homes across Ontario have transformed into something uniquely their own from Walks to Wellness, live music, shared meals with community leaders, volunteer recognition and community celebrations of decades of care and connection.

At the centre of every event is the same message.

LTC homes are vital parts of our communities.

This year, the whole sector is joining in. Even more homes, families, residents, elected officials and local partners taking part in .

Join us September 18, 2026.

We can’t wait to see what this year brings.

A beautiful moment for peopleCare Tavistock this spring. OLTCA recognized residents after using their monthly bingo winnings to buy school snacks, backpacks and hygiene supplies for the Tavistock Assistance Program.

“We love giving back, and we will continue to do it because it’s the right thing to do.”

What does it really mean when we say Ontario’s population is getting older?

This new episode of Statistics Canada's Eh Sayers podcast is a clear and helpful look at how changing demographics are affecting everyday life in Canada, from housing and health care to caregiving and family support.

It also looks at the rise of the sandwich generation and the added pressure that comes with longer lives and smaller families.

For Ontario, this matters deeply. By 2040, 1 in 13 people in the province will be over the age of 80, and Ontario’s 80+ population is projected to nearly double.

It is a useful 20-minute listen for anyone thinking about what these changes mean for seniors, families, caregivers, and our health system:

Canada’s population is getting a makeover, and it is changing the way we live. We are digging into new demographic data with Patrick Charbonneau, Section Chief in Demography at Statistics Canada, to see how big boomer and millennial generations, plus fewer younger people, are shaking up demand...
