5 ways you can improve your horse’s topline - from the ground!

Whether your horse is an athlete or a pasture puff, a healthy back is essential for longevity and comfortability. Without a strong, healthy back, compensation patterns will arise and there is a greater risk of injury.

As care takers for equine partners, we need to place greater value on prehab. The goal is to prevent injuries from happening in the first place, rather than having to rehab injuries due to short comings in our partners musculature, that could have been helped with earlier intervention.

I’ve listed a few exercises that can be done to help improve your horse’s back musculature. Disclaimer: each horse is unique and has different strength, endurance and ability. These recommendations are not specific to any horse and the intensity, frequency and duration of exercise will be different for every individual. Be mindful not to ask your horse for more than they’re capable of.

What are the benefits of Kinesiology Tape?

Kinesiology tape is a fantastic supplemental tool to be used along side manual therapies. The tape creates a lift of the skin, allowing fluid to move more easily throughout the underlying tissues. This can help reduce fascial restrictions, pain and inflammation while improving lymphatic flow and proprioception. K-tape is non-invasive, unrestrictive of movement and can be used all over the body to influence the skin, fascia, muscles and joints with a targeted approach. This makes it a great complementary support to manual bodywork!

Who is part of your horse’s village?

It’s no secret that it takes a village to care for our equine partners. Barn managers, everyday support staff, farrier, veterinarian, bodyworker, nutritionist… the list goes on.

Do you have a bodyworker as a part of your horse’s village?
Not only can bodywork do wonders for your horses nervous system, but regular bodywork will improve performance, mobility, circulation and movement patterns. All of these benefits contribute to injury prevention and lessen strain on the body.
Bodywork is an integral part of EVERY equine care and maintenance plan.

The poll is more than just the spot behind your horse’s ears. It’s a key junction of bones, muscles, and nerves that affect how your horse moves, carries themselves, and even accepts the bit.

Here’s what makes up this small but mighty area:

Bones:
The poll is formed where the skull meets the atlas, the first cervical vertebra (C1). This joint, called the atlanto-occipital joint, allows your horse to flex, extend, and slightly tilt the head.

Muscles & Soft Tissue:
Several muscles attach here, including the re**us capitis, obliquus capitis, and parts of the splenius and brachiocephalicus. These muscles coordinate to move the head and neck. When they’re tight, it can restrict motion all the way through the topline.

Nerves & Sensitivity:
The poll houses important nerve pathways, including branches of the trigeminal nerve, making it a very sensitive area. This is why tension or ill-fitting tack near the poll can quickly cause discomfort or resistance.

When the poll is free and relaxed, your horse can move with ease, softness, and better connection through the body.
When it’s tight, you’ll often feel it everywhere else.

Gentle bodywork can make a world of difference in restoring balance and comfort at this crucial junction.
