Methylene blue (MB) is a known PHOTOSENSITIZER! Lol
When it absorbs certain wavelengths of light (strongly around 660–670 nm in the red range, and it also absorbs across UV), it can transfer energy to oxygen and generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). This property is deliberately used in medical photodynamic therapy (PDT) for antimicrobial effects (e.g., acne, wounds, viral inactivation) or other targeted treatments like anti-aging!
Here's the low down:
1. Powerful mitochondrial antioxidant
It works inside the mitochondria (the energy factories of your cells), helping neutralize free radicals at the source of aging rather than just on the surface.
2. Supports collagen & elastin
Studies on human skin models found it upregulates key extracellular matrix proteins, leading to thicker dermis, better hydration, and improved skin structure.
3. Helps delay cellular senescence
In fibroblast studies (including cells from progeria patients), it outperformed several other antioxidants in stimulating healthy cell proliferation and slowing aging markers.
4. Dual UV protection + repair
Research published in Scientific Reports showed methylene blue absorbs UVB more effectively than oxybenzone at the same concentration, reduces UV-induced DNA damage, and helps clear UVA-related oxidative stress — while being safer for coral reefs.
5. Potential synergy with red light
Because it absorbs light in the 660–670 nm range, it's shows additional benefits when applied before red light therapy. The molecule can enhance mitochondrial response when light is present, though this is an optional “boost,” not a requirement for its main benefits!
