Shannon Burton is one of our clinics Registered Social workers. She recently has attended two talks; The Black Child & Family: Emotional and Psychological Challenges of Intergenerational Trauma and Ethically and Culturally Competent Assessment of Black Children. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

"Intentional or unintentional, cultural differences can open the door to subpar treatment of Black people seeking mental health treatment. Racial and ethnic disparities in mental⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
health treatment in Black communities often come about because of stereotyping, bias, and play therapists’ uncertainty. Often, the therapeutic relationship is viewed as an unequal distribution of power, so a treatment provider’s perception of how Black people present in therapeutic spaces may colour their judgments and the level of respect they accord Black clients.
