Cover-up is always a compromise between what was and what needs to be. But sometimes you get a project where there’s no compromise — just the decision to go all in. This is exactly that case. Under this work is a dense black tattoo that dictates its own terms at every stage. A skull would’ve covered all of this without much trouble. But Rick came in with a solid idea, and we decided to keep the spirit of the original sleeve — using Gustave Doré’s painting The Triumph of Christianity from 1868 as the foundation. An epic battle scene, the sky torn between light and darkness, figures caught in a vortex of chaos — it all fit into the concept perfectly. The work isn’t finished yet — the upper part will be reworked as well.
