Laser Hair Removal is a very unregulated industry in Canada. This article suggests that stricter rules need to be put in place and I wholeheartedly agree.
However, recommending the procedure be done by doctors and plastic surgeons is quite ridiculous. A laser tech does not need a medical degree.
Currently there are NO GUIDELINES on the training of Laser Hair Removal. None. Meaning that the certificate on the technicians wall means very little. If we're going to start implementing some policy, it should be around standardized basic training for technicians and holding Laser device distributors accountable for who they are selling machines to.
PS. The woman they cite in the article who was recently badly burned, bought a groupon from a salon who had awful reviews of multiple people being burned. Do your research and get a good referral just as you would most services. Groupons are for restaurants and experiences, not for zapping your body with a class 4 laser!
A dermatologist who treats at least two clients a week with injuries from laser hair removal says it's "frustrating" to see clients suffering due to a lack of regulation in the Canadian beauty industry.
