Not because these supplements are ā€œbad.ā€

But because acne-prone skin is extremely sensitive to shifts in hormones, oxidative stress, and sebum chemistry.

Here are a few that can quietly trigger breakouts in some people:

Fish oil - if the oil is oxidized or PUFA intake is already high, it can increase lipid oxidation in the skin.
Biotin - high doses can compete with vitamin B5 and increase oil production.
Vitamin B12 - can shift the skin microbiome and trigger inflammatory breakouts.
Whey protein - strongly increases IGF-1 signaling, which stimulates sebaceous glands.
Ashwagandha - in some women it can increase androgen signaling, which can worsen hormonal acne.

This is why acne rarely improves with generic supplement stacks.

What clears acne is understanding what your skin is actually reacting to.

Inside my 1:1 Clear Skin Program, we use advanced testing and clinical pattern interpretation to identify the real drivers of your acne and create a personalized strategy to heal your skin from the inside out.

These habits might seem simple, but they matter.

Before we start working on hormones, gut health, nutrient deficiencies or deeper root causes, we need to create a foundation that allows the body to heal.

But lifestyle is only the first layer.

If your acne still won’t budge, testing helps us understand what’s actually happening underneath the surface—so we can stop guessing and start working on what your body needs.

Clear skin isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing the right things in the right order.

Most people hear insulin + acne and immediately think: insulin resistance.

But after working with hundreds of acne patients and reviewing their labs, I see three very different insulin patterns:

1. Insulin is too high.
The classic insulin-resistant/PCOS pattern. Higher insulin can amplify IGF-1 and androgen signalling, increasing oil production, congestion and inflammation.

2. Insulin looks ā€œnormal.ā€ā€ØFasting glucose and insulin can look beautiful, while the way the body handles food throughout the day may tell a different story. This is where I start looking deeper at post-meal regulation, gut health and inflammation.

3. Insulin is very low.
Sometimes this simply means excellent insulin sensitivity. But in an under-fuelled, over-exercised or chronically stressed woman, very low insulin can be part of a bigger low-energy picture—often alongside low estrogen and progesterone and poor skin repair.

Same acne.

Three completely different metabolic patterns.
And three women who should NOT receive the exact same acne protocol.

This is what functional testing allows us to uncover: not just that you’re breaking out, but why your body is creating the conditions for acne in the first place.
I’m going much deeper into this next.

These are the signs that your body is healing and your skin is just about to get clear for good:

1. You go through your day without feeling like you are 3 months pregnant. No bloating, no gas, only slipping into your favourite jeans and having them fit like a glove.

2. You p**p first thing in the morning effortlessly. No coffee, no laxatives, no uncomfortable feeling of fullness. A complete morning elimination means your liver cleared bile overnight, your gut motility is functioning and your body is detoxing properly.

3. You wake up before your alarm without feeling like you have been hit by a bus. No pressing snooze.

4. You fall asleep within 15 minutes and stay asleep until morning. No 3am wake-ups. No racing thoughts. No ā€˜trying to get back to sleep’

5. Your period comes on time, without warning. No cramping, no bloating, no getting upset that the lid wasn’t put back on the peanut butter properly.

6. Your nails are strong and your hair isn’t falling out.

7. You can automatically remember the name of that girl who used to live next door to you. And you don’t search for words when you are having a random discussion with your friends.

8. You handle stress without falling apart. Someone cuts you off in traffic and you don’t spiral.

9. You stop feeling hangry and getting a headache if dinner is served a little late. Your metabolism is finally operating normally.

10. Your anxiety fades into the background. You know that you have got this situation and you see the whole picture - you no longer hyper-fixate on that one thing.

Your acne is giving you information.

It’s telling you to look deeper.

Because when acne keeps coming back despite everything you’ve tried, there is often something internally that hasn’t been addressed.

Inflammation. Hormones. Gut imbalances. Nutrient deficiencies. Detox pathways. Your nervous system.

Your skin may be where you’re seeing the problem but that doesn’t mean your skin is where the problem started.

The painful breakouts. The bumps that never fully went away. The dark marks that took months to heal. The woman who stopped wanting to look in the mirror.

She didn’t need another acne cream. She needed us to understand WHY her skin wasn’t healing.

Here’s some of what we did first:
Beef liver — nutrient + iron support
Vitamin D3/K2 — immune + skin support
Digestive enzymes — improve digestion + nutrient absorption
P5P — replenish low B6
NAC — antioxidant + glutathione support
Phosphatidylcholine — cell membrane + healthy fat support
Gut + gentle drainage support — rebuild before eradication

We also added an anti-inflammatory, protein-rich diet, healthy fats, stable blood sugar, morning sunlight, daily movement, nervous-system healing and individualized emotional/homeopathic support.

And we did not immediately attack everything we found on her GI-MAP.

First we supported digestion, nutrient status, the gut barrier, detoxification and nervous system.

Then, when her body was ready, we moved into targeted eradication.

Because healing acne isn’t just about killing microbes. It’s about rebalancing the body from within so the skin has what it needs to heal.

If you don’t understand your pattern, you will stay stuck in cycles of trial and error.

Here are 5 acne patterns I see most often:

āœ”ļø Insulin-resistant acne
Breakouts around ovulation, driven by blood sugar imbalance and excess androgens

āœ”ļø Lymphatic acne
Cystic breakouts near the ears or neck, often recurring in the same place

āœ”ļø Poor detox acne
Jawline breakouts before your period, linked to estrogen not clearing properly

āœ”ļø Microbiome-driven acne
Cheek, chest, or back acne even without obvious gut symptoms

āœ”ļø Stress acne
Flare-ups during stress that worsen every other acne pattern
This is why skincare alone hasn’t worked.

Because your skin is responding to what your body is dealing with internally.

If you’ve been on Accutane and your acne came back, you may have noticed something else:

Your skin isn’t the same as it was before.

As a naturopathic doctor specializing in acne, I’ve worked with hundreds of acne patients and reviewed hundreds of functional lab tests — and there’s a pattern I keep seeing in women who have previously taken Accutane.

The deep cysts may be gone, but now their skin is dry AND breaking out. It’s more reactive. More sensitive. They may develop tiny bumps, redness, perioral breakouts, fungal-looking acne and lesions that take forever to heal — sometimes alongside dry eyes and other dry mucous membranes.

And it has made me ask an important question:
What if, in some women, the skin never fully regained its resilience after Accutane?

Accutane profoundly suppresses the sebaceous glands and changes the lipid environment of the skin. But rebuilding healthy, resilient skin requires resources.
Healthy fats. Protein. Iron. Zinc. B vitamins. Antioxidants. Healthy digestion. A balanced microbiome. A regulated immune system and nervous system.

And these are exactly the areas I often find struggling when I look deeper at my post-Accutane patients and their labs.

This is why I will never look at acne as just a skin problem.

Full-body healing happens from the inside out. We have to understand what is happening with the gut, nutrients, hormones, immune system, metabolism and nervous system — and then restore balance in the right order so the skin has what it needs to heal.

If you took Accutane, your acne came back, and your skin has never felt the same since, comment CLEAR and I’ll show you the steps I use to uncover what may still be preventing your skin from healing.

Your gut has a built-in cleaning system called the Migrating Motor Complex (MMC). Think of it as a housecleaning crew that sweeps leftover food, bacteria, and debris from your small intestine to your colon between meals. 🧹

When this system stalls, those stagnant particles cause bacterial overgrowth and inflammation, which often show up as persistent breakouts. To support your MMC, focus on spacing your meals 4–5 hours apart to allow this sweeping cycle to complete. A healthy gut is the foundation for clear skin, proving that true healing happens from the inside out.

The time between first meeting with my team and your lab test interpretation is SACRED.

It’s a critical phase where we prepare your body for deeper healing. We break through emotional patterns that are keeping you stuck and congested, we gently nudge your nervous system out of survival, reduce inflammation in your gut, start some GENTLE lymph movement and heal your skin barrier.

And not only does this phase prepare your body for deeper healing, but it informs me about the type of care you need. How does your body reaction to detox, how much focus do we need on nervous system healing, are you sensitive to certain supplements and more - this all helps guide my treatment protocol for you.

Working with me and my team is the most bespoke, personalized experience out there - absolutely essential to heal deep, chronic acne.
