It's okay to feel stigmatized, just don’t internalize it.

We all have some things about ourselves that are not always favourable—things we can change and some things we can’t or don’t wish to change.

is subjective and belongs to the stigmatizer for something they perceive as a stain on someone, or an attitude of disgrace associated with someone’s age, race, religion, personality, ability, sexuality, employment status, place of origin, a particular circumstance, or quality of life.

Ways We Can Stop Stigma...

🗣Talk openly about situations —Social media is a great space to engage positively – respond to misperceptions or negative comments by sharing facts and experiences.
👩‍🏫Educate yourself and others.
🎗Be conscious of your word (language) choice – remember that words are powerful.
📣Advocate fair treatment for self and others, and compare how they would treat someone else.
⛑Normalize seeking help and treatment for your situation.
💕Show compassion for those marginalized.
✨Choose to empower instead of shame which disempowers.

📜Public
•Discrediting and devaluing others.
•Ill-treatment of people with behavioural or physical conditions.
•Belief in stereotypes can affect job prospects, housing/loan decisions, and the quality of healthcare that people receive.
•Affects mainly individuals or smaller groups.
•Similar to public stigma, is social stigma by family/friends.

🏢Systemic
•Reduced access to care and resources due to policies.
•Exists when stereotypes are incorporated in laws, institutional policies, and organizations that regulate or influence society.
•Affects large groups of people.

•Internalization of negative stereotypes.
•Internalized stigma affects a person's # self-esteem and self-efficacy leading to persistent doubt and .

Nurture your Central Nervous System (CNS). The CNS is your body's telecommunication or central processing unit. It relays the functions in our body through a complex network of nerves to and from the brain via the spinal cord. The brain controls all the body's functions.

How to nurture your CNS
* Breathe deeply
* Get some sunlight
* Stretch your body
* Hug somebody
* Laugh out loud
* Take cold showers
* Get plenty of nighttime sleep
* Eat a variety of nutrients
* Drink lots of fluid
* Read, meditate and pray

Benefits of a healthy CNS
* improve cognition leading to greater clarity
* regulate breathing and heart-rate leading to lower stress or psychological status, a major source of poor wellbeing and premature mortality
* improve digestion
* reduce or eliminate pain, headaches and migraines
* increase flexibility and mobility in the extremities and spine
* increase energy
* improve quality of sleep
* improve balance and coordination

Everyone is talking about mental health and mental-illness, but did you know that while the terms are often used interchangeably, they are not the same thing?

🎗Mental health is a state of . It includes our emotions, feelings and thoughts as well as how connected we feel to others, and how well we manage the highs and lows of life.

🎗The absence of is a great predictor of some mental illnesses.

🎗Mental illness affects all of us either through personal experience, or a family member, friend or colleague; or even vicariously through various mediums.

📊HERE ARE SOME STATS:

🧠Every year, 1 in 5 Canadians directly experience a mental illness.
🧠By age 40, about 50% of the population will have or have had a mental illness.
🧠Mental illness affects people of all ages, education, income levels, and cultures; however, such as racism, poverty, homelessness, discrimination, and colonial and gender-based violence, among others, can worsen mental health and symptoms of mental illness, especially if mental health supports are difficult to access.
🧠Approximately 5.4% of the Canadian population is affected by major depression, and 4.6% of the population experience anxiety disorders.
🧠About 1% of Canadians will experience bipolar disorder (formerly called “manic depression”), and another 1% will experience schizophrenia.
🧠Eating disorders affect approximately 1 million Canadians —It impact women 10 times that of men, and have the highest rate of mortality of any mental illness.
🧠Substance use/abuse affects approximately 6% of Canadians.
🧠In 2021, over 47k Canadians died by su***de.
🧠More than 32% of Canadians don’t have access to mental health care.

🏁Setting and pursuing meaningful and attainable is a great way to protect our mental health. Goals help us stay focused on our own strengths and avoid harmful competition and comparison.
