Summer is full of brain-friendly moments, and they don’t have to be complicated.

A new walking route adds novelty and attention, two things your brain loves.

Eating outside with someone you enjoy adds connection, and connection is protective.

Learning something new builds challenge into your routine, even if you’re a beginner.

And time near water is a simple way to downshift stress and reset your nervous system.

Pick one and make it your summer default. Which one are you trying first?

Cognitive reserve is the brain’s ability to keep functioning well, even when life, stress, aging, or illness make things a bit harder.

An easy way to picture it is a map with multiple routes. If there’s traffic on one road, you’re not stuck. You have options. Cognitive reserve is what helps your brain “reroute” and keep going.

The good news is you can start building it at any age. Small, steady habits add up, like: movement, quality sleep, learning something new, social connection, and managing stress.

Want the full breakdown and practical ways to build yours?

Our eyes do more than help us see—new research reveals they might be a window to our memories.

For years, researchers have studied how eye movements reveal hidden connections to memory. Today, that work could help pave the way for earlier dementia diagnosis.

At Baycrest, Dr. Jennifer Ryan has been at the forefront of this research, exploring how eye-tracking can uncover changes in memory processing long before traditional symptoms are recognized.

Her team helped show the first direct connection between the brain’s memory centre and the system responsible for eye movements, and how this connection weakens with age, contributing to forgetfulness.

Researchers also found that when we try to remember something, our eyes naturally repeat the same movement patterns, even while looking at a blank screen. This “eye replay” appears to strengthen memory, almost like mental rehearsal.

Why does this matter?

Earlier dementia diagnosis could mean:
• Earlier access to support and care
• More opportunities for treatment and planning
• Better outcomes for patients and families

Dr. Ryan’s research is helping move the field closer to a future where non-invasive eye-tracking tools could support earlier detection and intervention for Alzheimer’s disease and other memory disorders.

Everyone knows biking is “good for you.” But here are three benefits people don’t talk about enough.

First, it can be a fast stress reset. Rhythmic movement, steady breathing, and a change of scenery can help your body shift out of fight-or-flight, especially on a tough day.

Second, it trains balance and coordination. Starting, stopping, steering, scanning your surroundings, and adjusting your body position all work together, and that full-body awareness matters as we age.

Third, it makes movement more automatic. When biking is how you get somewhere, even part of the time, it’s no longer another task on the list. It’s just built into your day.

If you’re riding with us, we’ll see you May 31 for Bike for Brain Health!

High blood pressure isn’t just about heart health. It’s connected to brain health, too.

Over time, high blood pressure can affect the blood vessels that support the brain, increasing the risk of stroke, memory changes, and cognitive decline.

But there’s encouraging news: blood pressure is something we can take action on. Healthy habits, regular monitoring, and medication when needed can all help protect both brain and heart health over time.

If you haven’t checked your numbers recently, this is a great reminder to check in with your care team. Small steps today can make a meaningful difference long term.
