For the past eight months Carrie has been volunteering with VHA’s Safer Spaces: Hoarding Support program. As a semi-retired professional home organizer, she knows first hand the impact a decluttered and safer living space can have on both mental and physical health.

Working with an experienced volunteer organizing coach, like Carrie, can help make the emotionally stressful task of decluttering easier to manage. Her compassionate and supportive approach can make a real difference with the clients she works with.

“I really enjoy hearing the memories and stories connected to clients’ items,” says Carrie. “Sometimes, when the story can be heard, it helps them be able to let go of an item so it can find a new home with someone else.”

When asked if she would recommend volunteering at VHA, her answer is an easy one. “VHA is a wonderful community with great programs to support people in different ways. Have a look at their programs and see if your skills and interests might fit one of them.”

Meet Francis, an NSWOC (Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence) here at VHA. As a home care nurse, Francis plays a critical role in caring for patients with acute and chronic complex wounds and ostomies.

For him, the best part of his job is seeing clients make a full recovery, knowing that the care he helped provide has made an impact on their healing. “I’m always so touched when clients thank me for taking the time to share explanations while I provide compassionate care,” says Francis.

He also loves that he gets to share his knowledge with fellow visiting nurses who want to learn about wound and ostomy care. Some might say that supporting others is just a part of who he is.

For Francis, why he joined VHA is simple. “You’re surrounded by experts and great leaders here. We always strive for excellent quality of care for our clients based on best practice standards at the right place and at the right time.”
