I’ve talked about AKN quite a bit on my page, but I wanted to create a more organized education series that’s easy to follow and come back to.

I’ll be breaking down what AKN is, what can contribute to it, how it can progress, and why early and consistent management matters. I’ll also be sharing images of progression, along with treatment results from clients I’ve worked with, to show the difference proper care can make over time.

Acne Keloidalis Nuchae requires ongoing management, but first, you need to understand what stage your AKN has progressed to.

Not every case needs to jump straight to surgery. Proper assessment, education and early management can help determine what your next steps should actually be.

Looking at where this client’s AKN was before surgery, there may have been an opportunity to manage the condition more conservatively before considering excision. Unfortunately, by the time he came to me, we were now dealing with significantly more scar and keloidal tissue.

AKN can calm down… but that doesn’t always mean it’s gone.

The inflammation may decrease, the bumps may flatten, and the area may look completely settled then suddenly, another flare-up begins.

That stop-and-restart cycle is common with Acne Keloidalis Nuchae because the affected hair follicles can continue to become irritated and inflamed.
