"Osteopath" and "osteopathic manual practitioner" are not the same thing — and in Ontario, the distinction is legally significant. 💡

In Ontario, the title "osteopath" is legally restricted to members of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. OAO members are osteopathic manual practitioners — highly trained manual therapy specialists who practice osteopathic principles through hands-on assessment and treatment.

Understanding this distinction helps you make more informed decisions about your care — and protects you from misleading credentials.

What does it take to regulate a healthcare profession in Ontario? More than most people realize. 🎯

Regulation requires sustained government engagement, credible evidence of risk to the public that regulation would mitigate, organized professional representation, and a clear framework for training standards and complaint resolution. The OAO has been building that case through submissions, advocacy, and national and international collaboration since 1999.

In Ontario, anyone can call themselves an osteopathic manual practitioner, as it stands today. That's why the Ontario Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners exists. 🔬

OAO membership is your assurance that a practitioner has completed the extensive training required to practice safely and ethically — including a minimum of 4,200 hours of study and 1,000 hours of supervised hands-on clinical training.

These aren't arbitrary requirements. They're based on World Health Organization benchmarks for safe osteopathic practice.
