What actually happens during an osteopathic manual practice appointment? More than most people expect. 🏅

An osteopathic manual practitioner begins with a thorough assessment — asking about your health history, observing your posture and movement, and using skilled palpation to identify restrictions, tensions, and imbalances throughout the person. Treatment then uses a range of manual techniques to ease those restrictions and support each patient's natural function.

The approach is whole-person and client-centred — not just focused on where it hurts.

The OAO Standards of Practice define what safe, professional osteopathic manual care looks like — and every OAO member is expected to uphold them. 🔬

These standards address scope of practice, professional conduct, patient communication, record-keeping, and continuing professional development. They aren't guidelines — they are requirements that members are held accountable to.

In the absence of government regulation, professional standards like these are the strongest protection available to patients seeking osteopathic manual care in Ontario.

Osteopathic manual practice is built on four foundational principles — and they change the way you think about health. 🔬

❶ Every structure in a person supports their function. ❷ The natural flow of a person's fluids — lymphatic, vascular, and neurological — must be preserved and maintained. ❸ Each person is an integrated whole — physical, emotional, and cognitive systems work in harmony. ❹ When a person has fewer physical barriers to health, wellbeing is optimized.

These aren't abstract ideas. They are the clinical framework that guides every osteopathic manual assessment and treatment.

In April, OAO members gathered for our Annual Members Meeting — one of the most important events in the association's calendar. 🎯

At the AMM, members were updated on OAO's progress and accomplishments, with an update on the 2026 Strategic Plan. The Board of Directors were welcomed, and each Committee Chair presented a summary of their accomplishments.

Attendees enjoyed a complimentary "Pre-AMM" workshop by Dr. Marnie Luck, ND. Dr. Luck's presentation covered hormonal replacement therapy for women in perimenopause to postmenopause with current evidence, benefits, and risks of hormone therapy. She also offered guidance on individualized risk assessment and introduce integrative strategies for supporting women through the menopausal transition.

Follow us for updates on next year's "Pre-AMM" speaker. Save the date! Thursday April 22nd, 2027.

Membership is not passive. It is participation, continual learning, and community.

Before your next appointment, ask this one question: Are you an OAO member?

OAO members have agreed to uphold a Code of Ethics, meet stringent Standards of Practice, and pursue ongoing continuing education throughout their careers.

In a profession that is not yet regulated in Ontario, membership in a professional association is one of the strongest signals of accountability you can find.

Osteopathic manual practice is regulated in many countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, & France. In Canada, Osteopathy is regulated in New Brunswick only.

The OAO is working to change that — advocating for regulation of manual osteopathy as a separate and distinct healthcare profession in Ontario. Regulation would mean government oversight, standardized training requirements, and formal accountability for all practitioners — providing stronger protection for the public.

Understanding where the profession stands today is the first step in supporting where it is going.
