Falls Prevention Starts With Movement 👣

Did you know that improving strength and balance can significantly reduce the risk of falls?

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury in older adults. Regular exercise helps improve stability, coordination, confidence, and independence.

All my classes include some of these exercises, but I think it’s time we have a focussed session sometime soon.

Here are a few simple exercises you can do at home, which support better balance and mobility:

✨ Sit-to-stands – strengthen legs and improve everyday movement

✨ Heel-to-toe walking – helps with coordination and balance

✨ Single-leg balance – improves stability and body awareness

✨ Calf raises – builds lower leg strength for safer walking

✨ Step-ups – supports stair confidence and leg control

A few reminders:

✔️ Start slowly and use support if needed

✔️ Focus on good posture and controlled movement

✔️ Wear supportive footwear

✔️ Stay consistent — even 10–15 minutes a day can help

Falls prevention is about avoiding injury — and it’s also about maintaining independence, confidence, and quality of life.

Small daily habits lead to meaningful long-term improvements.

Let’s twist again!

This week, we focus on the benefits of twists, in our gentle fitness and yoga classes.

Benefit #1: A flexible spine is a happy life. Your spine is the centre of all movement. When it’s flexible, mobile and moves well, so do you.

Benefit #2: Your intestines will love it. Giving a gentle squeeze to that long length of intestines helps them to release moisture and retake up moisture including nutrients. This is especially important when we age, as our intestines become less motile, and therefore move less. Exogenous movement, moves our intestines for us.

Benefit #3: Increased circulation around your organs. Most of our organs are here. Think of how much benefit the extra blood to the kidneys, liver, pancreas, etc. would benefit them.

Benefit #4: Breathing better. There are small muscles between your ribs that need to remain toned and flexible to allow for better breathing. This plus your diaphragm, are complementary in keeping your breathing strong and big.

When life feels complicated, go back to basics, keep it simple.

This has been one of my top body/mind/soul wellness tips!

Good nutrition, hydration, and better sleep hygiene all help “press the reset button“.

Taking a long walk instead of driving to the gym, eating a kale salad instead of something more costly or harder to prepare, or even just sitting quietly for 5 minutes noticing your breath, are all small ways you can simplify what you’re doing.

Keeping it simple is one of the best ways we can reduce feelings of overwhelm or create space to deal with tough emotions such as grief, sadness, disappointment or whatever else is in your emotional landscape.

Some people call it a “detox“. I call it common sense.

Keeping worrisome news out of your feed, and choosing not to spend time with negative people (at least for a time), helps us to focus on things we can control rather than things we cannot.

There’s some new local artwork at Sugar Ridge Retreat Centre! 👼.

Check out these beautiful angel wings made of driftwood from Lake Simcoe. They hanging in the new Forest Studio and you can take a cute picture here.

If you’re interested in coming, I have retreats on the following dates:

April 17-19 Yoga and Deep Healing Retreat.

May 29-31 Pilates, Yoga + Nature Retreat (more of this program is outdoors and some light hiking).

August 21-23 Yoga on a surfboard retreat. 🏄‍♀️You need to be comfortable swimming and being in a lake.

I’m also teaching one day retreats introducing people to Ayurveda on Thursdays May 28 and August 20.

Registration for those is directly on the website. It’s about $600 for the weekend or $200 for the day, includeing your accommodation, food which is absolutely delicious, and the entire program. There are no extra costs at all.
