If we've never met before, I'd love to introduce myself. 😊 Hi, I'm Dr. Michelle Heighington, ND.

Looking back, it's funny how life doesn't always take the path you expect.

As a child, I was happiest outdoors, surrounded by animals and nature. I spent countless hours horseback riding, and it was there that I had my first glimpse into natural medicine. I loved helping the vet whenever I could and was fascinated by how simple ingredients could be used to support healing. Learning to make herbal salves for horses sparked a curiosity that stayed with me for years.

Growing up, I always imagined a career in medicine. But like many people, fear and self-doubt influenced my decisions. Chemistry intimidated me, and I convinced myself that medicine wasn't for me. Instead, I pursued a career in law.

Even though I enjoyed many aspects of that work, something always felt missing. That led me to become a Holistic Nutritionist, and one of the most meaningful experiences of my life followed—a medical anthropology internship with the University of Toronto in Namibia. There, I had the opportunity to study the role of nutrition in people living with HIV/AIDS. It reinforced how deeply connected nutrition, lifestyle, environment, and health truly are.

After completing my degree, I met the person who would become both my partner and my biggest supporter, Dr. Joseph Steyr. He encouraged me to believe in myself and pursue the dream I had put aside for so many years. With his support, I returned to school and became a Naturopathic Doctor.

Today, I feel incredibly grateful that every stage of my journey has shaped the practitioner I am. My background in nutrition, law, global health, and naturopathic medicine has taught me to listen carefully, think critically, and always see the person behind the symptoms.

My passion is helping people better understand their health and creating personalized, evidence-informed treatment plans that fit their lives. I have a particular interest in digestive health, women's health and gynecological care, integrative cancer care, and skin health, including cosmetic acupuncture.

Colon Cancer Isn’t Just an ā€œOlder Adultā€ Disease

Colon cancer is rising in younger adults, and it’s happening faster than many people realize.

🧠 Nearly 10% of colorectal cancer cases now occur in people under 50 — and rates continue to rise.

This isn’t about fear.
It’s about awareness.

Your gut health today plays a powerful role in your long-term health tomorrow. Supporting digestion, inflammation, and the gut microbiome early may be one of the most important preventative steps you can take. And we can help.

Your gut does more than digest food — it helps protect you.

Bio:
As a dedicated therapist specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I am deeply
committed to supporting clients through various challenges, including anxiety, stress, trauma,
relationship issues, depression, and more. My approach is centered on creating a safe, non-
judgmental space where you can explore your concerns and emotions openly.
Coming from a teaching background, I have cultivated a great deal of patience and am adept at
communicating in a way that resonates with clients, regardless of their background. My personal
journey through grief and loss is what inspired me to pursue a career in therapy. I understand the
importance of having a space where one can speak freely, share their thoughts, and feel truly
heard.
Having immigrated at the age of 10, I also deeply understand the challenges of starting over in a
new country, leaving behind friends and family, and navigating the complexities of a new life.
These experiences have further shaped my empathy and understanding for those facing
transitions and struggles.
In our sessions, we’ll work together to identify and understand the patterns affecting your well-
being. By drawing on your strengths, we’ll develop effective strategies to improve your quality
of life. Whether you& #39;re navigating specific issues or seeking personal growth, I’m here to guide
you every step of the way.
Let’s work together to find the path that best supports your journey towards healing and personal
development. I offer services in both English and Romanian.
