I recommend every menstruating patient track their cycles as it gives us so much insight into their health. It helps us to:

✨ Diagnose PMS/PMDD as the gold standard diagnostic is prospective ratings of symptoms across menstrual cycles.
✨ Understand if someone is in perimenopause, which is done through cycle changes and not blood work.
✨ Determine whether changes to the cycle are providing feedback on other health systems that need support like stress levels, nutrition, etc.
✨ Help us catch and treat hormone symptoms and conditions like PCOS, endometriosis, luteal phase defect, HA, etc.

I have been seeing a greater sense of urgency in practice that cycles are not “regular” because they don’t come at the same time every month. This can be completely normal!

We need to normalize variations in menstrual cycles while understanding how helpful it is to watch for changes over time 💜

Heading in to the last clinic week of the year, I am sitting here feeling so much gratitude for all of the patients I have worked with this year ✨

Thank you for opening up to me, confiding in me, and letting me work along side you as you make changes to support your health. Change and prioritizing health is not easy, and I am inspired by you daily!

In the midst of the busiest time of the year, I am taking a pause to appreciate how grateful I feel to be working in a career that I love and am so passionate about. Excited to see what 2023 brings 💜

What can you take a pause to feel grateful for?

I believe that our symptoms are messages from our body and provide clues into what they need to feel their best. My job is to get curious with you and figure out what these symptoms mean.

Sometimes that’s through blood work, sometimes that’s through a thorough clinical history taking, and sometimes we need to dig even deeper with our investigative work.

But we can figure this out, and you deserve to feel your best💜

If you are noticing changes to your menstrual cycles, more intense PMS, sleep issues, body composition changes, etc. I want your to know that you are not alone!

Many of us think about menopause as something that happens in our 50s, and are unaware of the hormone effects that can begin to occur in our 40s as ovarian function and brain communication changes.

You deserve to understand what is happening in your body, and most importantly, how to support your hormones through this decade 💜

Research shows that understanding your menstrual cycle and how hormones fluctuate through the month can improve your symptoms of PMS (think: mood swings, irritability, bloating and water retention!)

As I say again and again, one of the best things you can do to become more in tune with your hormones and menstrual cycles is to track. Download an app or use a calendar and note when you have your period, any symptoms experienced before or during your period - pain, breast tenderness, mood swings, energy, etc.

Trends in our menstrual cycles can give us so many insights into our health!

Endometriosis affects 10-15% of women of reproductive age and 70% of women with chronic pelvic pain have endometriosis (!!).

There is a significant delay to diagnosis and treatment because the gold standard diagnostic test is a laparoscopy procedure.

This means, way too many women are walking around with debilitating pain every month.

Please don’t put your life on hold every cycle for period pain, and know that you deserve support 💜

Many of us have no idea if our period is actually considered ‘normal’. From messages like ‘the monthly curse’ to having horrible period symptoms minimized, it can be hard to know what is worth seeking help for.

Here are some guidelines:

⭐️ Cycle length between 24-34 days (counting from day 1 of one cycle to the next 🩸)
⭐️ 3-7 days of flow/bleeding with small clots
⭐️ No need to pop painkillers. While some heaviness and discomfort can be normal, you shouldn’t have to take multiple painkillers to function.
⭐️ Feeling out of control or unlike yourself before your period. If you have mood swings, breast tenderness, bloating, etc that impact your quality of life before your period, you deserve to get support for that.

Track your cycles! This is the best way to tell whether your period symptoms need some support. Perimenopasue is also a time where cycle lengths can change, so tracking can help us understand that.

ALSO! It’s important to note that it can be completely normal to have a period that falls outside of these parameters once in awhile. Our cycles are influenced by so many factors - illness, stress, etc. that it’s about the trends over time 📈

Memories of HH from .nd 💖

“Feeling equal parts nostalgic and excited about our upcoming clinic move 😭🎉🙌.

I joined Higher Health Centre]] at 7 Yonge Blvd back in 2016 when I was still a naturopathic student as front desk support. I shared so many great memories and learning experiences with as her extern in my final clinical year! I am so grateful to her as I navigated my career move from CPA to ND 🤓👩‍⚕️❤️.

I feel so lucky to have found a clinic with amazing and talented colleagues that truly feels like home. For many people, it can take a few work places before you find somewhere that feels right, and I am so grateful that I found that straight away with the team Higher Health Centre]] 🥰

I am so excited for what is to come and to see you all in our new space!”

WARNING: PMS may get worse in peri-menopause ❌. .nd

PMS is caused by a sensitivity to fluctuationing hormones, and peri-menopause is a time of GREATLY fluctuating hormones!

Some women are also sensitive to progestogen (progesterone-like substances) that are often in oral contraceptives, and can result in PMS-like symptoms.

So, what can you do?

⭐️ Track your cycles! This helps us determine whether mood changes are linked to hormones.

⭐️ Make sure you understand the risks and benefits and different options of contraception available to you.

⭐️ Explore botanical and nutraceutical therapies to manage PMS.

In a review article, higher levels of resilience were associated with:
⭐️ Milder physical symptoms in perimenopause
⭐️ Better quality of and satisfaction with life
⭐️ Lower perceived stress
⭐️ Fewer depressive episodes

Resilience was defined as “the capability to successfully withstand, adapt, or recover from significant stress and adversity”.

We know we can’t eradicate all stress, so let’s work on building your resilience to stress 💜

Is it the “baby blues” or PPD?

The “baby blues”, or experiencing brief periods of tearfulness, exhaustion, and insomnia within the first few days of delivery is incredibly common, with up to 80% of mothers feeling this way 💜

Postpartum depression, or PPD, is something different, and is when new mothers meet the diagnostic criteria of major depressive disorder within several months of birth.

It is so important to monitor your mood and to have other people around that can help you, as sometimes it can be really hard to notice the changes when you are in it. Engage health care providers, your partner, or family members - it takes a village!

Pay special attention if you have struggled with your mood before giving birth, as experiencing PMS or PMDD or other mood disorders may increase your risk for PPD.

And most importantly, know that you are not alone, and that there is help available 💜
