When her son Michael was born with congenital heart disease, pumping breastmilk became one of the few things Alina felt she could do to help during a time filled with uncertainty. Inspired by the care her family received at The Hospital for Sick Children and grateful for her ability to produce more milk than Michael needed, she chose to become a milk donor—giving back to vulnerable babies and families facing challenges of their own 💜

“Donating milk feels meaningful because I have seen firsthand what families of medically vulnerable babies go through. While we were fortunate not to need donor milk ourselves, I know that if we had, I would have been deeply grateful to the donors who made it available. Being able to help another family, even in a small way, during hard times means a lot to me.”

Need more room for summer frozen treats this upcoming weekend ☀🍦?

The Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank may be able to help! If you’re breastfeeding and have extra breastmilk supply, donating your breastmilk can free up extra freezer space while also helping to provide human donor milk to preterm and medically fragile babies across Ontario and Atlantic Canada.

Because the sweetest thing in this freezer isn’t the ice cream, it’s the incredible generosity of milk donors whose donations help give vulnerable infants the best possible start.

In memory of her daughter and in gratitude for the donor milk that helped nourish her son after he was born at just 27 weeks, Meghal chose to become a milk donor.

Her first milk donation took place on the anniversary of her daughter’s passing, transforming grief into a gift for vulnerable babies and their families 💜.

“I chose to donate in memory of my daughter. Through donation, I felt I could honour her life while helping other babies and families facing difficult journeys of their own.”

This World Breastfeeding Week, we celebrate the power of human milk to give babies the strongest possible start.

The Rogers Hixon Ontario Milk Bank, located at Mount Sinai Hospital, provides safe, high-quality pasteurized donor human milk to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) across Ontario and Atlantic Canada.

When parent's own milk is unavailable, donor human milk helps ensure vulnerable babies continue to receive the nutrition and protection they need. By supporting breastfeeding and milk donation, we're helping strengthen a system of care that has supported infants for generations.

Thank you to every donor, family, and health-care professional making this possible 💜.

Milk Bank Staff Spotlight ✨

Coincidence or coordinated scrub plans? We’ll let you decide 😅!

Meet some of the faces behind the Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank! Our Diet Technicians manage all incoming milk donations. They prepare, process, and test donor human milk before it is distributed to hospital neonatal intensive care units (NICU) for medically fragile infants.

While their matching scrubs caught our attention, their dedication to support safe handling and distribution of donor milk for the tiniest patients is no coincidence 💜

“Seeing Sam so small and vulnerable in the NICU changed me instantly as a father. I realized love wasn’t about fixing things—it was about showing up and staying steady.”— Sam’s dad, David.

“Knowing Sam had access to donor milk allowed us to focus on being present with him, rather than worrying about what he was or wasn’t getting.”

For Sam’s family, the NICU journey came with uncertainty and moments that no parent can prepare for. During that time, donor milk from the Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank became an important part of Sam’s care—providing nourishment while giving his family reassurance in an otherwise overwhelming experience. Sam’s dad reflects on how support during those early days made a lasting difference—not just medically, but emotionally.

This Father’s Day, we recognize the quiet strength of fathers, father figures, and partners whether at NICU beside or at home—showing up, staying steady, and supporting their families through uncertainty with love and dedication 💙.

Summer is almost here ☀️!

What’s on our Summer Shipping List? ✅ double liners! With warmer temperatures comes extra care in how we transport donor human milk. That’s why we use double liners during the summer months– helping keep donor milk safely frozen during transport and delivery.

This extra layer of insulation helps protect the precious milk that supports vulnerable babies across Canada’s NICUs.

“Nothing prepares you for having your baby at 28 weeks and having to stay in the NICU”

For Sam’s family, the NICU journey brought uncertainty and moments no parent expects.

Sam was born prematurely and received pasteurized donor human milk from the Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank during his early feeding journey. Donor milk became an essential part of his care, supporting his growth and nourishment during those critical first days of life. His mother, Tanya, shared the challenges of early breastfeeding and the comfort she felt knowing Sam was receiving donor milk. Nearly 5 years later and Sam is thriving 💛!

“Today, when I look at Sam, it’s hard to believe how far he has come. Seeing him grow, thrive, and become the wonderful child he is today fills me with gratitude and perspective. The difficult days in the NICU felt endless at the time, but now they are part of a story that shows just how resilient these little babies can be. To families currently relying on donor human milk, there is absolutely no shame in needing support. Donor milk is not a reflection of what you couldn’t do—it’s a reflection of a community of parents helping one another when it is needed most.”
