Mitral Valve Disease & Heart Murmurs in Dogs

Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) is the most common cause of heart murmurs in dogs, particularly in older and small-breed dogs. While hearing the words “heart murmur” can be concerning, not every dog progresses at the same rate, and many continue to enjoy a good quality of life for years with appropriate monitoring and veterinary care.

In this series, we explored:

• What the mitral valve does
• How Mitral Valve Disease develops
• Why murmurs occur
• Common signs to watch for
• Diagnostic testing used to assess heart function
• The importance of ongoing monitoring

Understanding the condition is the first step toward making informed decisions about your dog’s health and wellbeing.

This series is intended for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis or treatment.

Heart murmurs are commonly detected during routine veterinary examinations, but not all murmurs are the same. One way veterinarians describe a murmur is by assigning it a grade based on how loud it sounds when listening with a stethoscope.

In this series, we explored:

• What a heart murmur is
• How murmurs are graded
• Grade I through Grade VI murmurs
• What murmur grades can and cannot tell us
• Why additional diagnostics may be recommended

It is important to remember that a louder murmur does not always mean more severe heart disease, and a quieter murmur does not always mean a condition is insignificant. Murmur grading is only one piece of the overall assessment.

Veterinarians may recommend additional testing, such as chest radiographs, blood pressure measurement, or an echocardiogram, to better understand the underlying cause and determine the most appropriate monitoring or treatment plan.

Understanding murmur grades can help owners feel more informed and prepared when discussing their dog’s heart health with their veterinary team.

Heart Murmurs in Dogs: What Does It Mean? 🫀

Hearing that your dog has a heart murmur can be concerning, but a murmur itself is not a diagnosis.

A heart murmur is simply an abnormal sound heard during a heartbeat caused by turbulent blood flow. Some murmurs remain stable for years, while others may indicate an underlying condition that requires further investigation.

In this new series, we’ll be exploring heart murmurs, common causes, diagnostic testing, monitoring, and ways to support overall cardiovascular wellness.

This post is intended for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for veterinary advice or treatment.

We’ve reached the end of our Kidney Health Bloodwork Series.

Throughout this series, we’ve explored SDMA, Creatinine, BUN, Phosphorus, Potassium, Albumin, Total Protein, Blood Pressure, Calcium, Sodium & Chloride, CBC, and Urinalysis.

One of the most important lessons to remember is that no single test tells the whole story.

Veterinarians evaluate multiple pieces of information together, including bloodwork results, urinalysis findings, blood pressure measurements, clinical signs, medical history, and trends over time to build a complete picture of your dog’s kidney health.

A value that is slightly outside the reference range does not automatically mean kidney disease, just as a normal value does not always guarantee everything is perfect. Context matters.

This is why routine monitoring, regular veterinary visits, and understanding your dog’s individual trends are so important.

Our goal with this series was to help dog owners better understand the tests commonly used to assess kidney health and feel more confident discussing results with their veterinary team.

Thank you for following along with us. Knowledge empowers better decisions, better monitoring, and better advocacy for our dogs.

Here’s My story; Before Wuff’s Canine Health Clinic, there was Tuffy and Finn. My heart and my soul dogs.

In June 2025, both of my boys were diagnosed with kidney disease after routine bloodwork revealed elevated kidney values. Like many pet owners, I was devastated and terrified of what the future might hold.

Instead of accepting the diagnosis at face value, I spent countless hours researching canine kidney health, learning how to interpret bloodwork, understanding the importance of monitoring trends over time, and exploring nutrition, hydration, and supportive supplementation.

Over the months that followed, repeat testing showed normal SDMA values and provided a much clearer picture of their kidney health.

Their journey taught me one of the most important lessons I’ve learned: a single laboratory value does not tell the whole story. Kidney health is about the complete picture. Bloodwork, urinalysis, blood pressure, clinical signs, nutrition, and ongoing monitoring all matter.

Tuffy and Finn’s journey played a significant role in inspiring my passion for canine nutrition, wellness, and canine health education.

This post also marks the beginning of our upcoming Kidney Health Bloodwork Series, where I’ll be breaking down important values such as SDMA, Creatinine, BUN, Phosphorus, Albumin, Total Protein, Blood Pressure, Urinalysis, and more so dog owners can better understand what their dog’s lab results may mean.

Knowledge empowers better conversations, better monitoring, and better outcomes.

Puppy Myth vs Fact: Crate Training

Crate training is one of the most misunderstood topics in puppy care. When introduced properly, a crate isn’t a punishment, it’s a safe, comfortable space where your puppy can rest, relax, and learn important life skills.

A well-managed crate can support house training, help prevent destructive behaviours, provide security during travel, and give puppies a place of their own when they need quiet time.

The key is positive introduction, appropriate crate time, and ensuring your puppy’s physical and mental needs are met throughout the day.

Tick Awareness Series 🌱🚨

Finding a tick on your dog can be stressful, but knowing what to do next can make all the difference.

The longer a tick remains attached, the greater the risk of disease transmission. That’s why regular tick checks and prompt removal are so important.

If you find a tick:

• Remove it carefully using fine-tipped tweezers
• Pull straight upward with steady pressure
• Clean the area thoroughly
• Monitor your dog for any unusual symptoms in the days and weeks that follow

Watch for signs such as lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, lameness, vomiting, diarrhea, or redness around the bite site.

Not every tick carries disease, but staying informed and acting quickly can help protect your pup’s health.

Stay tick aware. Stay prepared.
