This is my Oma, Dirkje Helena de Jong (Vroon), born on October 5th, 1915 in Dinteloord - a small town in the south of Holland.

I'm highlighting this amazing woman because it's international women's day, and her strength needs to be celebrated. Without her courage and perseverance, myself and my daughter would not exist. This is because Oma kept my dad, Heilke David de Jong, alive in an internment camp that was known to have an 80% death toll during WW2.

Genangan concentration camp was a women and children labour camp situated in Semarang, Indonesia. In the first month, at least 7 children died everyday from lack of food, medicine and dysentry. While many children in our country debate the choice between cereal or toast in the morning, my dad would see if any of his friends survived through the night. He had severe PTSD for almost his entire life, and a disdain for anyone in uniform. It's a wonder he was able to raise a healthy and supported family the way he did.

My Oma was caring for my dad and his younger brother, Simon Leendert de Jong. Conditions were cramped, with 100 people per room, and food was scarce. At the time, Simon was 7 lbs (at two years old) and suffered from amoebic dysentery. He was very close to death. My dad had jaundice and measles and was very ill as well. Meals were traditionally tapioca and water three times per day. This was expected to support everyone after labouring in the fields all day. I will spare bringing up the various other abuses that were imposed on the women and children.

My Oma said that the key to surviving was her faith and her children. Everyone over 40 died, and my Oma was 80 lbs at the time when the camp was liberated. Because of her strength and smarts  - my family is here today.

Happy international women's day everyone. I particularly want to send strength to the women and children from Ukraine right now.

Spent the day evaulating 4th year interns do B12 injections before they enter clinic!

So many people are sub optimal in this powerful little vitamin. I see this particularly in those over 50, vegans and vegetarians, people with absorption issues like Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, IBS, celiac, hashimoto's thyroiditis, graves disease, psychiatric disorders, eating disorders, and use of common medications for acid reflux, bile acid sequestriants (for high cholesterol), anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, birth control pills, anti diabetic meds, and regular use of alcohol.

Really, the list just goes on and on.

Symptoms can manifest in 100 different ways, but the most common are slow reflexes, foggy thinking, chronic fatigue, dizziness, memory loss, irritability, sleep disturbances, palpitations, cardiovascular disease due to high homocysteine, osteoporosis, fainting, headaches and even infertility for both men and women.

Many people don't know they have a deficiency and have no idea what "good" feels like.

Note that serum B12 measurements can show false normal or even falsely high when the individual is indeed low. The problem with these tests is that they measure total b12 in the blood, and not functional B12 deficiency. Another problem is that conventional ranges are typically designed to detect frank disease and don't take into account optimal levels. The test must be interpreted taking into account other biomarkers and symptoms.

So in a nut shell, get your B12 checked with someone who knows what else to test and how to interpret results. You may not no what "good" feels like!

Zebra: unique, beautiful, strong. In medicine, the term "zebra" is used in reference to a rare disease or condition.

My beautiful friend will undergo surgery to remove her paraganglioma on April 29th and 30th. This lady is an amazing mom to 3 beautiful girls, with her youngest turning 1 tomorrow. She is also one of the smartest and caring people I know. I swear she knows more about paragangliomas than the top neurosurgeons (she also has an undergrad in neuroscience and training in radiation oncology).

This is a woman who continually comforts and empathizes with our trivial problems while she's climbing a mountain. She is one of a the kindest people I know, and is always putting others first. I will wear this bracelet with pride.

Erica- you've got this. Your strength can overcome anything. You have an immense support team back home. The girls will be fine, and you'll finally be pain free.
