Why dental hygienists use so many different instruments during a cleaning?

Why the air polisher?
Why the ultrasonic scaler?
Why the hand instruments?
Why not just use one tool for everything?

So I decided to put them to the test.

Using my typodont (and some homemade "fake tartar"), I'll be demonstrating what each instrument is designed to do, what it can't do, and why I choose them in a specific sequence.

The goal isn't to find a "winner." Each instrument has a different purpose, and understanding that can help make sense of what happens during a dental hygiene appointment.

Ultrasonic vs. Airpolisher? Not so fast...

A little experiment with my typodont. ( dental term for fake teeth)

I painted a couple of teeth with marker to show how different dental hygiene instruments work.

One thing I want to highlight: this is NOT about one method being better than another.

Ultrasonic scalers, Airpolisher, and good old-fashioned hand instruments all have their place. They're different tools designed for different purposes, and often the best results come from using a combination of techniques tailored to each patient.

As dental hygienists, our job isn't to use the same approach for everyone, it's to choose the right tools for the right situation.

And yes... hand instruments might be making an appearance in the next demo. 😉
