Good fats 🥑🥥🌰
I spent majority of my life thinking fats were the enemy. I steered clear of them when I was ‘dieting’, would only look for- low fat this and low fat that so I wouldn’t gain weight. I wasn’t doing myself ANY favors, in fact I was depleting my body of essential nutrients!
Fat is a type of nutrient, it’s necessary for many of the body’s functions:
🥑Component of cell membranes, giving them structure and maintaining a strong barrier against pathogens
🥥Brain function and mental wellness
🥑Healthy skin
🥥Blood sugar balance
🥑Absorption of fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamins A, E, and D
🥥Hormone production
🥑Energy source
So there are ‘bad fats’ out there such as trans fats and polyunsaturated fats. Trans fats are, in general, generated during the processing of oils and fats. Basically trans fats are overly processed. Foods with polyunsaturated fats are not good for you because they are made up of unstable molecules which makes them vulnerable to oxidation.
Unnatural fats may cause fatty deposits in the blood vessels and raise your LDL cholesterol (the bad one) and lower your HDL (the good one), which may lead to major disease.
I recommend to simply avoid most processed food unless it is from a trusted natural/organic company that uses high quality fats. Read your labels!
So what kinds of fats should you be consuming daily? All naturally occurring fats – saturated and monounsaturated– are healthy.
🌰Nuts (including nut butters like almond butter, sunflower butter, and peanut butter)
🌱Seeds such as chia seeds and flax seeds (always choose ground flax seed when consuming)
🫒Olive oil and Avocado oil
🥑Avocados
🥥Coconut oil
🐟Fish (wild caught)
Bottom line- consume more GOOD fats and steer clear of the over processed oils and foods. Your brain, skin, and heart will thank you 💜
