Can we talk about the SIBO rabbit hole for a second? Because I learned the hard lesson of what happens when you only focus on SIBO (hint: you spend a lot of money to end up back at square one). 

When you are desperate to find the root cause of your bloating (because nobody else is giving you answers), it’s SO exciting to learn about SIBO. It feels like you finally have an answer and more importantly: a path forward. 

But testing for and addressing SIBO is only the starting point. There are likely MANY reasons why you tend to bloat so much, and how you ended up with SIBO in the first place (because it doesn’t just happen). 

These are a few- yes, a few- of the more common reasons for bloating that I see in my nutrition practice.

If you feel like everything you eat is triggering symptoms…⁣

I promise you—your body isn’t just “sensitive to everything” 🤍⁣

This is one of the biggest things I see with IBS.⁣

People start cutting more and more foods,⁣
thinking that’s the solution…⁣

…but their symptoms don’t actually improve long-term.⁣

Because a lot of the time,⁣
it’s not the food itself.⁣

It’s what’s happening underneath:⁣

• eating in a stressed, distracted state⁣
• digestion not working optimally⁣
• things not moving properly (even if you go daily)⁣
• holding tension in your body without realising⁣

Your gut doesn’t just respond to food—⁣
it responds to your environment, your nervous system, and your habits.⁣

So before you remove another food…⁣
pause.⁣

Support your digestion first.⁣

Because when your digestion improves,⁣
your tolerance to foods often does too ✨⁣

You’re not broken.⁣
Your body just needs the right support.⁣

Probiotics are marketed like the solution to every gut problem.

But most bloating isn’t caused by a lack of probiotics.

Constipation, stress-related distension (APD), and carb fermentation are far more common causes.

Which means taking a probiotic without understanding why you’re bloated is often a waste of money.

We’ve all had those WHOOPS moments in our IBS journey, right? 🙈 You know, the times you tried well-meaning (but terrible) advice in a desperate attempt to find relief.⁣

Fibre, laxatives, ‘natural’ treatments... It’s SO tempting to try it all when nothing seems to work. Been there, done that. 😬⁣

I get it — early on in my own IBS journey, I felt like I tried EVERYTHING. And let me tell you: these are likely going to make you feel worse:⁣

🚫 Colon Hydrotherapy⁣
🚫 Herbal Laxatives⁣
🚫 Traditional Fibre Therapy⁣

Why didn’t they work? IBS is a motility issue, meaning your gut moves too fast or too slow (sometimes both). These treatments mess with your motility, which just makes your hypersensitive IBS gut feel worse. 😩⁣

So, what works instead? 🤔⁣
The key is to use therapies and foods that regulate motility, not disrupt it.⁣

Now, I focus on:⁣
💚 IBS-safe fibre⁣
💚 Gentle motility support like magnesium⁣
💚 Therapies like massage and gut-directed mindfulness apps⁣

Trust me, when you treat your gut gently and with care, the results are so much better. 🙌⁣

I’ve been there and I know how frustrating it is to try to eat more healthy but feel terrible from it.⁣

Sometimes the things we think are bad for our IBS are the things that we need to actually do for our IBS.⁣

I'm not talking about eating McDonald's day in and day out, I'm talking the 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 that we tend to internally agonize over and beat ourselves up when we do them:⁣

- Enjoying a glass of wine at dinner⁣
- Eating a meal that you didn't personally cook at home⁣
- Eating dessert⁣
- Grabbing food with friends on the fly⁣
- Not having every detail of your eating organized for the day⁣

I hate to break it to you, love, but gluten isn't the culprit behind your bloated belly.⁣

I know you felt better when you cut it out- I did too- but I bet you are still having a lot of bad days:⁣

〰️ Bloating⁣
〰️ Irregularity⁣
〰️ Pain⁣
〰️Nausea⁣

That you can't quite pinpoint the reason for.⁣

I have the answer...and it involves a little something called a Fructan.⁣

No, that isn't a typo 😉⁣

A Fructan is the carbohydrate in wheat that causes digestive distress in IBS sufferers like you.⁣

When you went gluten-free, you naturally reduced how much Fructans you eat. So you felt a little bit better.⁣

But you are likely still eating these sources of Fructans: ⁣

⚠️ Garlic⁣
⚠️ Onion⁣
⚠️ Dates⁣
⚠️ Dried fruit like mango⁣
⚠️ Broccoli⁣
⚠️ Asparagus⁣

When I was trying to figure out this IBS thing all on my own 15 years ago, I went 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐝 with the internet research and followed every bit of advice I could find online.⁣

I thought I was doing 'all the right things': taking the right supplements, eliminating the right foods, exercising and living an overall really healthy lifestyle.⁣

But I was still feeling really backed-up and bloated every single day.⁣

I was so frustrated.⁣

What I didn't realize is that Google was giving me surface level advice and what I ✨truly✨ needed to overcome IBS-C couldn't be found online:⁣

〰️ Stop sacrificing sleep to work out at 5am every day⁣
〰️ Stop sucking in my belly all day⁣
〰️ Break the anxiety cycle of always being in my head⁣
〰️ Learn to relax my pelvic floor ⁣
