Do you know the difference between “Direct Supervision” and “Supervision”?

Direct Supervision means the licensee who delegates an Aspect of Practice or a Restricted Activity attends with the delegatee and the patient while the delegatee is providing or performing the service, by physical attendance sufficient to allow the licensee to effectively supervise the delegatee.

Supervision means the situation where the licensee who has made a delegation is available at all times while the delegated activity is taking place, by physical attendance or by electronic means sufficient to allow the licensee to effectively supervise the delegatee.

Attention Licensees

Under the Health Professions and Occupations Act (HPOA), Restricted Activities and Aspects of Practice can be delegated.

However, delegation can only happen if two requirements are met:

• The regulatory colleges have authorized delegation of the activity in their bylaws, when specific criteria are followed.

• The professional who is delegating is satisfied that the person is able to perform the delegated activity safely and in a manner that does not cause harm.

Professions regulated by CCHPBC have, within College Bylaws, specified lists of aspects of practice and/or restricted activities that may be delegated. Aspects of practice and restricted activities are required to be delegated under direct supervision, or supervision.

Our latest College Newsletter is now available in a new, consolidated format.

We have moved to a single, bi-monthly newsletter that brings together updates across all the health professions we regulate. This new approach reflects our role as a multi-profession regulator and supports clearer, more consistent communication with licensees and the public.

While the format has changed, our commitment has not. Each edition continues to include profession-specific updates, relevant resources, and information that supports safe, effective care across British Columbia.
