2nd Wind Body Science

2nd Wind Body Science Anti-Ageing, kick-boxing/self-defence, outdoor survival and fitness. 2nd Wind Body Science is about building resiliency in your body, mind and spirit.

Decades in the military, martial arts and studying have taught me that you can be down, but not out and persistence will beat out talent, education and natural ability every time. Through training, nutrition and mindset we can push past our inborn abilities, environments and whatever “they say.”

“Catching your 2nd Wind,” is being able to come back again and again, despite your set backs. It is no

t just about muscle building, stomach flattening exercises and looking good. It is about going past the mediocrity and fear that holds us back to do what we really want to do. There are few things that satisfy me more than watching my clients succeed, whether it’s in my cardio kick-boxing classes or personal training sessions. Sincerely Doug Setter, BSc.

Flashback Friday. At age 52, giving an army reserves infantry course some "corrective" pushups to keep them motivated and on track. Sometimes the guys just need a little guidance to maintain to get through the training.

Blog 1: The Sit-to-Rise Test: What Getting Off the Floor Says About Your Longevity
Most people think longevity is about how many years you live. In reality, it’s about how well you can move, think and enjoy those years. One of the simplest ways to check your longevity in minutes is the Sit-to-Rise Test.

The Sit-to-Rise Test (SRT)

This test looks at how easily you can get down to the floor and back up without using your hands, knees or furniture.
How to do it
Stand in an open space with bare feet.
Cross your legs loosely.
Slowly lower yourself down to a seated position on the floor without using your hands, arms, or knees for support.
Now stand back up, again without using your hands, arms, or knees.
Have someone watch you, or film yourself, to count how many times you use your hands or lose balance.
Scoring (simplified)

Start with 10 points.
Subtract 1 point each time:
You use a hand on the floor or leg,
You use a knee for support,
You lose balance significantly.
A score of 8–10 suggests good functional fitness and lower mortality risk compared to lower scores. Lower scores show you where to focus your training.

What to do with your results

If your score is:

8–10: Maintain it with regular strength, balance and mobility training.
5–7: Great opportunity to improve. Focus on hip mobility, leg strength, and core stability.
0–4: Time to prioritise safe, guided training to improve strength and balance.
Next steps

If you’d like a structured way to improve your Sit-to-Rise score and support healthy ageing, my Sit-to-Rise Test Longevity Program guides you step-by-step from your current score towards stronger, more confident movement.

I keep getting ask "how to lose this spare tire?"
The 3 second method (yes, 3 seconds) is to roll your shoulders up, then pull them down and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Guess what happens?
Your stomach will naturally draw inwards.
So, before you increase your cardio workout and starve yourself into misery, FIX YOUR POSTURE FIRST. This can be done with a number of systems like yoga, Pilates, martial arts, many sports and dance. These activities often demand good posture. (See mom and some teachers were right about telling you to "sit up straight). Good posture strengthens the entire body, improves digestion and boosts confidence.
