spent this past weekend representing the Full Spectrum Doula Collective Vancouver at the fall meeting 🧡

She co-led a session titled “Full spectrum doulas and abortion care in Canada: the perfect pair,” - the session explored how doulas can work collaboratively with healthcare professionals to provide cohesive, client centred care that honours and acknowledges the whole person.

The session also discussed:

• how although it’s rising in popularity, the role of the doula has existed since time immemorial (and still does) all over the world
• the importance of having a support person in the room throughout procedural care - particularly as a safe person and witness for the client
• how having choice is a privilege
• the role of care work and lack of validation, value and appropriate compensation model
• why aborti0n doulas are not regulated and how it needs to remain that way - specifically how not having a college or title that is regulated by the government allows for flexibility, nuance and truly being able to support our clients emotional needs without being restricted
• the discrimination and judgement that aborti0n work still receives even within the doula community
• how seperating our repro health stages contributes to aborti0n being alienated and stigmatized
• so much more!!

Aborti0n doulas can be and do so many different things - one of the best parts of being a doula is the room for flexibility and being adaptable to our clients changing needs.

This is our working definition and there’s so much more that can’t be contained in an IG post. I’ll be sharing about the unique role that a doula plays in supporting folks seeking aborti0n and why you may want to have one in the coming weeks 🖤

I was recently pulling some resources for a colleague and was reminded of the incredible article “A Place for Herbal Abortion in Clinical Herbalism,” by .abortions .and.meadow

I wanted to share it with the aborti0n doula and provider community here as it’s a valuable resource that analyses data from community-led aborti0ns in the U.S. and Canada.

Gestational age, the synergy of formulation and timing, herbal actions, and the impact of having experienced support are all considered and analyzed.

“Herbalists and other knowledgeable community health care providers have the potential to fill a crucial gap in aborti0n care for clients in very early pregnancy or offer holistic care to those desiring aborti0n support. Like any other aborti0n method, safety and efficacy are dependent on understanding when and how a particular method is best applied.“

Thank you Dr.Cohen for bringing awareness to this issue! It’s unethical to make someone travel hours away from their community to access care when they can get in their own community! How is the college of physicians supporting family doctors by educating them on prescribing Mifegymiso? Secondly, Midwives and pharmacists should be able to counsel and bill for this service. We still have a long way to go.

There could be an increase in unintended pregnancies just as abortion becomes less available, putting women who are self-isolating in abusive situations at higher risk
