What you need to know.
Cover-ups in 2026 can fix almost any tattoo, but there are key things to understand:
1. Shift the focus
If the area allows it, we create a strong new focal point on clean skin and use supporting elements to cover the old tattoo.
2. Go bigger
For a proper cover-up, the new tattoo usually needs to be at least twice the size. Same size = muddy result.
3. Work with the existing tones
Whenever possible, we use a similar value range to effectively hide the old tattoo.
4. Healing matters
Bad healing can ruin even a good tattoo. With cover-ups, skin can be more sensitive or scarred, so proper aftercare is critical.
Send me your old tattoo or scar I’ll show you how it can be fixed

White on black just the way you like it. No filters, no editing, no contrast tricks. I did this piece on myself. I tried tattooing white over black before, but that was on fresh black and I wasn’t happy with the result. This time I reconsidered a few things and adjusted the technique. I’ll show the healed result later. If even 50 percent of what you see now stays, that will already be a success.

Mimir the raven will take your eye in exchange for wisdom. Sometimes tattoos have meaning, but most of the time they’re just an image. In that image the most important thing is contrast and composition. Describe your idea and we’ll create your design.

A long time ago I did old school and new school. I always felt these styles are timeless. They still look good today. I don’t want to go back to those dark times, but making something inspired by that vibe, why not. I can create a design with your favorite pet.

DM me and we’ll build the design together.

Hi, I’m Ivan. Vancouver-based tattoo artist specializing in black & grey realism and graphic work.
I don’t build tattoos for today. I build them to last. Long-term means structure first. Light creates form. Shadow builds depth. Details come last.
Fresh always looks good. Healed shows the real result. Time passes, structure stays, contrast holds.
No filters. Just process.
If you think long-term, start your project. DM to book.

I often hear from clients, “Look how many tiny details that’s awesome.”
Yes, it looks great while the tattoo is fresh.
But what will it look like in 5–10 years?
A tattoo isn’t temporary.
It has to hold up over time.
That’s why I prioritize contrast, light, and shadow.
Strong contrast stands the test of time.
And the tattoo will read clearly
not only up close, but from a distance as well.

From stencil to final contrast.
I focus on light, shadow, and flow not just details.
This is how a tattoo gets its depth and longevity.

Can you cover an old tattoo with greywash? Yes, but it takes more than just tattooing over it.
First, we shift the focus. The main detail of the new design shouldn’t sit directly on top of the old tattoo. We add a strong new element nearby so the eye goes there first, not to the old ink.
Second, we use light and shadow. Greywash helps build depth with smooth shading, background, and contrast. It’s not about making it darker it’s about blending the old tattoo into the new design.
Third, the new tattoo usually needs to be bigger. A small design won’t properly hide a large or dark old piece.
A good coverup is smart composition, strong focus, and controlled shading. Done right, the old tattoo becomes part of the depth, not the problem.

Can you achieve strong contrast on dark skin? Absolutely.
Every person’s skin tone is unique some lighter, some deeper but the artistic principles remain the same.
To create depth and clear contrast, I rely on the balance of light and shadow rather than overloading the design with excessive detail.
This approach allows the tattoo to read clearly, with solid contrast and smooth, controlled shading.
