Acute Injuries: What They Are & What To Do in the First 5 Days

An acute injury happens suddenly — often from a fall, twist, impact, or overstretch. Common examples include sprains, strains, muscle pulls, joint injuries, and sudden back or shoulder pain. These injuries can cause swelling, bruising, sharp pain, or difficulty moving the affected area.

The first 5 days are important for healing. Here’s what you can do to protect the injured area and reduce symptoms:

• Rest the area
Avoid movements or activities that increase pain. Giving the injury time to settle helps prevent further damage.

• Ice (if appropriate)
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time during the first 48 hours to help reduce swelling.

• Compression
A light wrap or bandage can help control swelling and provide support.

• Elevation
Raising the injured area above heart level can help reduce swelling and discomfort.

• Avoid heat, massage, and heavy stretching early on
These can increase swelling in the first few days.

• Watch for red flags
Severe swelling, inability to bear weight, numbness, or worsening pain should be checked by a healthcare professional.

At Rutherford Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic, our physiotherapists can assess your injury, explain what’s been affected, and create a personalized plan to help you heal safely and regain strength. Early guidance can make a big difference in your recovery.

🎒 Back-to-School Backpack Guide: Physiotherapist Tips
A well-fitted backpack can make a big difference for a child’s neck, shoulders, and back. Backpacks help distribute weight evenly, but when they’re too heavy or worn incorrectly, they can cause shoulder tension, neck discomfort, back pain, and posture changes.

Choose a backpack with wide padded straps, a supportive design that sits comfortably against the back, multiple compartments for better weight distribution, and a size that matches the child’s torso.

Pack it so the heaviest items sit closest to the back. Carry only what’s needed for the day and use compartments to keep weight balanced. Ideally, the backpack should be about 10–15% of the child’s body weight.

Wear it using both straps. Adjust the shoulder straps so the backpack sits snugly against the back rather than hanging low. The bottom should rest around the lower back or hip level.

Watch for warning signs like back, neck, or shoulder pain, numbness, tingling, headaches, or noticeable posture changes. These may indicate the backpack is contributing to strain or that another issue needs attention.

A backpack should support your child’s school routine, not cause discomfort. This school season, choose comfort, proper fit, and function over fashion. Your child’s growing body will appreciate it. 💙

🤸‍♂️ 5 Signs You May Need Physiotherapy:

Pain or stiffness shouldn’t be part of your everyday life. Here are five signs it’s time to see a physiotherapist:

1️⃣ Persistent Pain — If discomfort lasts more than a few days or keeps returning, your body may need guided recovery.
2️⃣ Limited Mobility — Trouble bending, reaching, or walking could mean joint or muscle imbalance.
3️⃣ Post‑Injury Recovery — After a sprain, strain, or surgery, physiotherapy helps rebuild strength safely.
4️⃣ Poor Posture or Work Strain — Desk jobs and repetitive tasks can cause neck, shoulder, or back pain.
5️⃣ Recurring Sports Injuries — Proper rehab and movement correction prevent future setbacks.

💙 At Rutherford Physiotherapy Clinic, our team helps you move better, recover faster, and feel stronger every day.

🏃‍♂️ Injured? The First 48 Hours Matter

An injury can happen anytime—during sports, at the gym, at work, or even from a simple slip or fall. The steps you take immediately after an injury can make a big difference in your recovery.

❌ What NOT to Do:
• Don't ignore persistent pain or swelling.
• Don't "push through" the pain or return to activity too soon.
• Don't massage a fresh injury if there is significant swelling or bruising.
• Don't rely on pain medication alone without identifying the cause of the injury.

✅ What You Should Do:
• Rest the injured area and avoid activities that worsen the pain.
• Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours if appropriate.
• Use gentle compression and elevate the injured area to help reduce swelling.
• Seek a professional assessment if pain, swelling, weakness, or limited movement continues.

Core Strength
🏋️ 5 Signs Your Core Needs Strengthening

Your core does more than just show up on the beach — it's the foundation for nearly every movement your body makes. If you're noticing any of these signs, your core might be due for some attention:

Unexplained lower back pain — When your core muscles aren't pulling their weight, your lower back compensates and takes the strain, leading to nagging discomfort.

Poor posture or constant slouching — A weak core can't hold your spine and pelvis in proper alignment, causing you to hunch forward over time.

Balance issues — Struggling to stand on one leg for 10+ seconds, or feeling unsteady on uneven ground, points to weak stabilizing muscles.

Difficulty with everyday movements — Trouble standing up from a chair without using your hands, or straining to carry groceries, signals your core isn't providing enough support.

Quick fatigue during exercise — If you can't hold a plank for 20-30 seconds without shaking, or you catch yourself holding your breath during workouts, your core endurance needs work.

Don't let a weak core lead to injury or chronic pain. Our physiotherapists at Rutherford Physio & Sports Injury Clinic can assess your movement patterns and build a personalized core-strengthening program to protect your back, improve your balance, and boost your athletic performance.
