Today would have been my father's 93rd birthday. My father, and my relationship with him, were both complicated.
My father could be generous and supportive, and he could sermonize and totally miss the person right in front of him.
He could be charming and funny, and ridiculously self-absorbed.
When he was alive, I was often caught up in the complications of our relationship and couldn't see him objectively. Which makes me, honestly, no different than any other child.
My father was neither "the best Dad" nor the worst. He was a man trying to deal with his own past and all the baggage he carried while trying to make life work in the present moment. He was unloved and unwanted as a child and spent most of his life trying to prove he was loved and wanted.
But he did keep trying.
I think about that more and more now.
The boy who was unwanted never stopped trying to belong.
The child who couldn't do anything to gain his parents approval never stopped trying to gain the approval of others.
And yes, it created problems - a lot of problems - but it's obvious, from this vantage point, that my father never stopped hoping he would belong, never stopped wanting feel loved and whole.
In other words, he never cashed out of the game.
He never gave up.

My mother points out every so often (and used to point out all the time when I was a kid) that I'm as stubborn as my father.
Yup.
I probably am. No matter how hard the game is some days (and the last few have been so painful), my chips are still on the table and I'm still in the game.
