♾We're excited to have Armand & Kelly Jerome returning to share their knowledge about the Red River Car. The Cart is one of the most iconic inventions of the Red River Métis, and Armand is deeply committed to preserving its history.

☸Armand has spent over two decades perfecting the intricate craft of constructing historically accurate Red River Carts. Known as a master cart maker, he combines skill, research, and dedication to recreate carts that honor their original designs. Each cart is a work of art—crafted entirely from local hardwood, featuring 12-spoke wheels that stand 5 feet 5 inches tall, and requiring over 300 hours of labor to complete.

The Red River Cart played a vital role in Métis history, particularly in the commercialization of the buffalo hunt and the fur trade. In fact, fur trader and writer Alexander Henry the Younger noted in his journal that the Red River Cart made its first appearance in 1801 at Fort Pembina. The carts flourished throughout the 1800s, with their popularity peaking between 1850 and 1870 before the arrival of the railway.

☸Armand & Kelly are offering storytelling, hands-on assembly of a half sized cart, rides and stories at 10:45am, Saturday, October 3. Be sure to add on this experience when you book.

♾The first knowledge keeper we would like to introduce is Borealis Beading. Borealis Beading is owned and operated by Melanie Gamache, a Manitoba Francophone Red River Métis beadwork artisan who started beading in 2014. Melanie has always been creative, but her passion for beadwork grew into what is now experiential tourism offering Métis Cultural Learning Experiences. These experiences provide unique and authentic learning opportunities for guests to gain a deeper understanding of Métis people's connections to beadwork, food, and nature.

🎨 Melanie is offering a beading circle experience at 9:30am, Saturday, October 3. You'll go home with a beaded project you created under her tutelage. Be sure to add on this experience when you book.

♾️ It’s Happening! ♾️

We are so excited to officially announce that Métis Arts & Culture Day is returning to Moon Gate this October 3! 🪶❤️

And this year, thanks to the support of Melanie Gamache of Borealis Beading and our grant partner, Manitoba Arts Council Indigenous 360 Program, we are able to bring this special day to life in an even bigger way.

But why does this day matter?

Because culture is meant to be lived, shared, celebrated, and passed from one generation to the next.

Métis Arts & Culture Day is a gathering rooted in land, river, relationship, and community—a day to come together and celebrate the many threads that make up our living Métis culture.

✨ Métis art and creativity
✨ Language and storytelling
✨ Music and dance
✨ Food and traditional flavours
✨ Hands-on cultural experiences
✨ Inter-generational knowledge sharing
✨ The people, places, and stories that connect us to one another

It is an opportunity for young and old to learn from one another, for knowledge keepers and artists to share their gifts, and for all of us to deepen our understanding and appreciation of Métis culture as a living, evolving part of who we are.

At Moon Gate, we believe that when we gather around the fire, share a meal, listen to a story, make something with our hands, or simply sit together in good company, we are strengthening the threads that connect us.

There is so much more to come, and we can't wait to share the artists, makers, storytellers, food, activities, and special guests who will be part of the day. Come gather with us. Come learn. Come celebrate. Come connect. Because culture lives when we share it. ❤️

🔥 MÉTIS KITCHEN PARTY ANNOUNCEMENT🔥

Saturday, September 19

Fall Harvest • Fire • Smoke • Music • Dancing
The days are getting shorter, the evenings are getting cooler, and the harvest is making its way from the land to our tables.

Join Michel and Jenny on Saturday, September 19 for another Métis Kitchen Party — a celebration of fall, good food, good company, and the simple joy of gathering around a table together.

For us, a kitchen party is about more than a meal. It’s about bringing people together, sharing what the land has given us, telling stories, making a little music, having a laugh, and staying a while.

This time, we’re celebrating fall harvest, fire and smoke, with a menu inspired by the local bounty of the Whitemouth River Valley — ingredients grown and raised close to home, prepared with care and cooked slowly over fire and smoke. 🍂

🌾 FROM THE LAND TO OUR TABLE
Fire & Smoke Chicken
Succulent smoked chicken, raised right here in the valley, served alongside tender spare ribs, slow-smoked and finished with our homemade BBQ sauce.

Maple Baked Beans
Homemade beans, sweetened with Canadian maple syrup and slow-cooked over an open fire until rich, smoky and full of flavour.

Local Corn on the Cob
Sweet local corn, boiled and slathered with melted herb butter.

Classic Baked Russet Potatoes
Baked potatoes served with sour cream and fresh chives.

Slaw & Bannock Biscuits

Cardamom Carrot Cake
A scrumptious homemade carrot cake, warmly spiced with cardamom and topped with maple syrup icing.

🍁 TO DRINK
❤️ Flavours-from-the-land inspired mocktails
☕ Trails End Coffee
🌿 Wild Mint Tea

And, as always, you’re welcome to bring your own alcoholic drinks. We’ll have the glasses and ice ready.

Music
Justin Lacroix, our country neighbour, will be playing and singing for you. We’re so grateful to have him and his family as part of our community.

” A little folk, a little rock, and a lot of heart! That’s what you get from Justin Lacroix ” – London Free Press

More details in the link below. We can't wait to welcome you to our table.

Don’t let a summer slip by without experiencing a Moon Gate Pizza Night or an overnight stay in the Whitemouth River Valley. We’re not your typical dinner out or just a place to lay your head. We pour our hearts into everything we do because we believe the simple moments become the memories you carry home. Come for pizza, stay the night, book a plant walk, and dip your toes in the river for a free minnow spa. Reserve your spot for the Ainsley Friesen concert on August 22. We still have a couple rooms left. RSVP soon! You can book a tarot reading with Maureen that evening too. Reflect. Reset. Stay natural.
