Drug Alert: Winnipeg - Thu. May 28, 2026

Pink chunks sold as PINK DOWN tested positive for medetomidine, carfentanil and fentanyl. A non-fatal overdose resulted from this substance.

Carfentanil is up to 100x more potent than fentanyl, and a tiny amount can cause an overdose.

Medetomidine is a veterinary tranquilizer that is up to 300x more potent than xylazine.

If you are using substances, please use with a friend — someone you trust, because you might be sedated for a long time.

Naloxone does not work on non-opioid substances such as medetomidine. You should still give naloxone in cases of overdose, since medetomidine samples usually contain opioids as well.

The sample tested positive using strips for fentanyl and medetomidine on May 15. Health Canada Drug Analysis confirmed these results on May 26.

Drug Alert: Winnipeg - Tue. May 5, 2026

Yellow chunk sold as fentanyl found to contain carfentanil, fentanyl and medetomodine.

Sent for confirmatory testing on April 8 after test strips at Street Connections detected fentanyl and medetomidine. Participant reported nausea, vomiting, shaking and sweating from use.

Carfentanil is up to 100x more potent than fentanyl, and a tiny amount can cause an overdose. Combining opioids with sedatives like medetomidine increases the risk of complex overdose.

Confirmatory testing at Health Canada Drug Analysis Service results:
* Medetomidine (2.31%)
* Caffeine (10.8%)
* Mannitol (52.9%)
* Dimethyl sulfone (13.9%)
* Carfentanil, fentanyl, and three additional fentanyl precursors. No quantities reported due to the presence of precursors or byproducts of fentanyl.

Medetomidine is a veterinary tranquilizer currently found in the local drug supply. It is stronger than xylazine and is only approved for use on animals. It decreases a person’s heart rate.

Naloxone does not work on non-opioid substances such as medetomidine. You should still give naloxone in cases of overdose, since medetomidine samples usually contain opioids as well.

Orange rock sold as DOWN was found to contain para-fluorofentanyl, benzodiazepine, caffeine and medetomidine.

Naloxone cannot reverse the sedating effects of non-opioid substances. Combining opioids with sedatives like benzos or medetomidine increases the risk of a complex overdose.

Sample was tested on February 13 at Street Connections. It contained:

-Para-fluorofentanyl, a synthetic opioid similar in potency and effect to fentanyl.
-Medetomidine, a veterinary tranquilizer approved only for use on animals. It is stronger than xylazine.
-Desalkylgidazepam, a new kind of benzodiazepine.-Caffeine, a stimulant. It does not reverse the sedating effects of opioids or tranquilizers.

Drug Alert: Winnipeg - Thu. February 18, 2026

Pink powder sold as flualprazolam was tested on the FTIR at Street Connections on February 13. It was found to contain medetomidine.

Flualprazolam is a benzodiazepine sedative, but the sample tested negative for benzos and fentanyl.

Medetomidine is an animal tranquilizer that is not approved for use in humans. It is stronger than xylazine.

This sample appeared to contain only medetomidine. Detection of medetomidine on FTIR suggests a high concentration of this substance in the sample.

Naloxone cannot reverse the sedating effects of non-opioid substances such as medetomidine.
