National Eye Exam Month is a great reminder to prioritize our eye health. Regular eye exams can help monitor changes, detect concerns early, and support overall eye health and well-being.

Learning how to safely cross a street is a critical skill for young adults who are blind or low vision.
Through real-world practice with trained instructors, students like Suzannah learn how to communicate with drivers and make safe decisions when crossing busy intersections and side streets.
At this side street, Suzannah's instructor helps her practice signaling to oncoming drivers that she’s ready to cross. This helps drivers see her, understand her intention, and come to a stop so she can cross safely and independently.

Which white cane tip works best for different surfaces?
The Dakota Disk is often a great choice for the beach because its wide surface helps keep the cane from sinking into the sand. For rough or uneven sidewalks, I usually recommend a roller ball because it rolls over cracks and changes in the surface more smoothly.
There isn’t one cane tip that works best everywhere the right choice depends on where and how you travel.

Congratulations to Penny Hartin, on her induction into the Hall of Fame: Leaders and Legends of the Blindness Field! We are incredibly proud to have her leading Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada's Board of Directors.

Dr. Penny Hartin was honoured alongside fellow inductees Janet Barlow and Deborah Chen at this year's induction ceremony, held during the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) international conference in Louisville, Kentucky. A bas-relief plaque bearing her likeness now takes its place at the Hall of Fame, housed at the American Printing House for the Blind.

Penny is recognized globally for her tireless advocacy advancing access, inclusion, and the rights of individuals who are blind. As former CEO of the World Blind Union, she built alliances and coordinated action across organizations worldwide — work that has shaped the field for decades.

We are proud to have her steady, visionary leadership guiding VLRC's Board. Congratulations, Penny — this honour is richly deserved!
