June 6 is National Health & Fitness Day!
National Health and Fitness Day is an annual coast-to-coast celebration of wellness held on the first Saturday of June. Originally conceived after the 2010 Vancouver Olympics to promote grassroots fitness, this event was formally established countrywide in 2014 through the unanimous passage of the National Health and Fitness Day Act.
Since then, this special occasion has rapidly grown into a nationwide movement motivating Canadians to discover the mental and physical health benefits of physical activity. Through organized community gatherings as well as individual participation, National Health and Fitness Day encourages citizens of all ages and abilities to kickstart healthier lifestyles.
Physical activity is known to significantly impact mental health by reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety and improving mood and cognitive function, underscoring the importance of an active lifestyle for overall health. However, in the digital age, new challenges such as the rise of online gambling have emerged, posing serious risks to mental well-being. The convenience and accessibility of online gambling can lead to addictive behaviors, financial stress, and emotional distress, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to digital activities to ensure online entertainment does not compromise mental health.
