A 37-year-old housewife and mother of five when she first took the stage at San Francisco's Purple Onion in 1955, Phyllis Diller became one of the first women in America to headline as a solo standup comic. The wild hair, the cigarette holder, and the unmistakable cackle were all her own invention, and behind them sat one of the sharpest joke writers in the business. Her gag file of more than 50,000 index cards now lives in the Smithsonian.

She starred alongside Bob Hope in three films and joined his USO tours entertaining troops in Vietnam. A trained pianist, she also performed as a soloist with more than 100 symphony orchestras across the country. She died in 2012 at age 95, still holding the stage record she set: more punchlines per minute than any comic of her era.
